I just posted a video update on my HO scale Central Vermont Richford Branch to my YouTube channel.

Highlights include:

1. A quick look at some recently weathered and completed freight cars.

2. Some thoughts on placing (and using) structure kits in composing a scene.

3. My thoughts on why backdrops may decrease the visual impact of a layout.

You should be able to access by clicking the video window in this post.

Otherwise, here's the link:

Excellent Video Marty!

I really like your autumn scenery. Very believable coloration. What are you using for trees armatures and foliage?

Also, what photo backgrounds are you using? All of your scenic elements blend together and looks very natural.

Well done!

Thanks for sharing Marty. You

Thanks for sharing Marty.

You have definitely captured the look and feel of the locale.

I love seeing the train with the rolling hills in the BG.

The trees and foliage shown

in this video are almost 100% Scenic Express. I actually don't use a lot of "fall" foliage, but focus on some of the more rust and brown colors that are marked as "soil" colors. (One of my favorites for sugar maples just past peak is one called "Georgia Clay" ).

I also use at least three shades of a similar color palette on each tree - a "shadow" (darker) tone; a "main" tone; and a lighter "highlight" shade.

Some of the larger foreground trees (I don't believe any are really visible in this video except in the distance) are either built up from florist wire or are made from Crepe Myrtle tips. If you look on the channel I have a lousy how-to video on making the Crepe Myrtle trees.

Not using any photo backdrops - all my backdrops are hand painted in acrylic.

Thanks for watching and commenting!

Thank you

for the kind words. I'm a big admirer of your work as well. I do follow your adventures here, even if I don't comment as frequently as perhaps I should!

Love the "Borrowed Scenery" Concept

Excellent video as always, Marty.   I have tried the concept of "borrowed scenery" with some success.   Here we see a view across the corner of narrow sections that are only 18-inch depth.   You get the treeline from the rear section even across the aisle on the right side (view across a ~4ft gap).

Keep them coming!

Awesome update!

If there is an RPM Conference in the Northern VA area the Fall in 2021 will your layout be on any "Open House" list?  I hope so as I would love to see the layout in person!

In my current plans for the Steel Mill area, I plan on not having a backdrop on a couple of the peninsulas, mostly because I need them deep and want to be able to reach the "middle" of the peninsula.  Any suggestion how to calculate how much higher/lower the scene farther away needs to be so it looks like there is no aisle and one deep scene?

Thanks!

Bob T. Nice shot and great

Bob T.

Nice shot and great composition. I love shots of trains coming around the bend.

The only thing that gives it away in regards to being a model railway scene, is the shadow of the tree on the wall.

Awesome shot!

Am I mistaken, or did I catch a clinic you did online over the summer (perhaps on NMRAx, perhaps somewhere else? )

Frisco, 1920ish layout, correct?

Although the MARPM

is still scheduled to take place (and I'm supposed to do a clinic) in late September there aren't any RPMs in northern Virginia I'm aware of.

Besides, I don't think I'm quite ready to let any large (or even small!!!) groups into the house quite yet.

Thanks @Marty McGuirk

Marty,

Yup, that is me on NMRA-X -- The Crawford and Cherokee.   I do have a build thread here on MRH.   Not much of a YouTuber, but I do try to keep posts up to date.
