Dead Pine needles? Scenery and structures

I have finally made some pine and fir trees.  I would like to have some realistic groundcover underneath the pine trees.  I used dark green fine foam for the Scots Pines and used 7mm static grass (eventually painted brown with dark green foam added) as with needles. 
 

Can I dye the static grass dark reddish brown etc?

The problem is 7mm in Ho scale is almost 2’ that is some big needles

wouldn't 2mm be more appropriate?

I'm a bit bleary-eyed, but would 2mm static grass scale out to be about 3.75 inches long in O scale? I've personally seen a fair amount of pine needles roughly that long under the pine trees in my 1:1 scale side yard.

Holy cow, one site is selling reddish-brown 2mm static grass in 1Kilogram bags.  That's a lot of pine needles.
