Does anyone have any experience with NWSL Stanton Drive for HO scale?  I'm working on repowering/powering light rail, so I'm interested in a motor drive that has a low profile and also something that is easy to wire for DCC.

Any experiences with this would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Some info

Use of the NWSL Stanton trucks has been discussed a few times within this forum. I vaguely recall seeing an in-depth article on the use some time ago, but not sure where (I was thinking MRH had an article, but I cannot recall where).

Here is one of the earlier discussions:

I might be wrong, but I vaguely recall Andy Reichert of Proto87 may have been doing something with the Stanton drive.

No Stanton Drive Issues in My Experience

I installed a Stanton Drive to power a HO Jordan 15 ton Mack locomotive kit several years ago.  I had to extensively modify the inside of the kit, a bit of the Stanton Drive frame and add weight but it turned out well. fine. Because the locomotive was so small, I didn't try to install DCC but I suppose a small N scale decoder could have been crammed in. Operationally, the  Stanton Drive ran just fine and was easy to wire for DC.  I have another Stanton Drive waiting on hand for when I get around to scratch building a locomotive for my NMRA Master Builder- Motive Power Certificate.

Keep in mind there are matching non-powered Stanton Drive units if you don't need the power of two motors for your light rail units.

Stanton drive

A few years ago I read of some positive result in the Kalmbach Model Railroader forums. Do a search. I just looked.

Tenshodo SPUD

Also, have a look for a Tenshodo SPUD. They appear on eBay every so often.

I was looking at one

to power my steeple cab but came to realize it would not run slow enough to perform realistic switching.  In a streetcar or interurban they should be just fine.  It's all about the gear ratio and the space available for the manufacturer.  Google Black Beetle Drive.  These units would be something worth looking at also.

Tenshodo is another option

I used a Tenshodo C-Power drive to repower an old brass boxcab.  Runs good.  Could be wired for DCC by disconnecting leads to motor and connecting to decoder.  Comes with lots of hardware for mounting sideframes, etc.  Screws, washers, brackets, spacers, weights.  Various axle spacings, wheel sizes available. I ordered from Japan, established business called Hobby Search. Just over $70US including shipped via DHL.
