Here is a look at a local from the Aberdeen Carolina and Western leaving the Norfolk Southern yard in Charlotte.

The conductor climbs aboard ACWR SD40-3 6926.IMG_1192.JPG Next, he connects the air hoses for today's train.IMG_1193.JPG After arriving at the first stop he makes sure a good coupling has been made. Stay tuned for part 2. IMG_1196.JPG

After switching out the grain

After switching out the grain elevator he inserts a red flag in the coupler to signify the end of the train.IMG_1197.JPG Here we see our crew crossing the Rock River.IMG_1200.JPG Then crossing grade in Star, NC.IMG_1203.JPG More to follow.

Speaking of great-looking paint schemes, nice to see that IAIS hopper at work there Jeff, far from home.

Joe I always liked the IAIS

Joe I always liked the IAIS scheme so when Scale Trains produced one I had to have it.

Looking sharp

Jeff, Your AC&W layout is looking sharp. Taking the time to replicate the steps a prototype crew does adds time and fun to an ops session.

You're Modeling My Neck of the Woods

Jeff,

Thanks for sharing your work.  I live in Aberdeen over here on the "Sand Hills" side of the railroad, and I'm about a block from the ACWR tracks.  I heard the night crew charging up the steep grade at about 4 AM this morning.  Haha.  I love seeing those SD40-3s work, and the crews always have a friendly wave.  Keep up the good work.

Thanks Alex, I watched your video last week, very nice. I am happy to see anything on the ACWR.

Do you know any train symbols or how many they run a day?

I'm not sure about specific

I'm not sure about specific train symbols, I'll switch on the scanner next time they come through and see if I catch it.  They run as needed, there's always a day shift crew but it depends which side of the railroad they're working.  I think they're trying to expand to two day shift crews on the weekdays, which would have on crew on the "Sand Hills" side of the railroad (Aberdeen to Star) and one crew on the "Piedmont" side (Star to Charlotte).

For example here's the traffic in Aberdeen this past week:

Friday morning the day shift ran a local from Candor to Aberdeen with ACWR power, worked the yard, and headed back up to Candor.  They worked Reliance Packaging in Aberdeen on their way out.  That evening they brought the power back "light engines" and parked it in the yard so it could be used as helpers the next day.

Saturday morning CSX dropped off a unit grain train in Aberdeen with CSX engines.  ACWR crew took it to Candor, and those SD40-2s were used as pushers to get the train out of town.

Sunday (at some point, I think at night) the unit train was brought back down.

Tuesday around lunch, CSX dropped off two unit grain trains spliced together.  A super train!  That had to be almost 200 cars.  The crew drove in from Candor, first train went out with a mix of ACWR and CSX power (one CSX unit wasn't working right), and another engineer pushed with more CSX locomotives.  Pusher engines returned down the hill, grabbed the second unit train, and doubled it up the hill (left half the train at the top near Ferrell Gas, went back to the yard and got the second half).  It was getting dark as they left town with that second one, I'm not sure if he made it to Candor or had to tie it down for the night crew.

Wednesday right after lunch the first empty unit train showed back up from Candor.  Tied it down in the yard, crew drove back to Candor.

At around 3 AM this morning (I know because it woke me up... CSX unit had a loud horn...) the night crew brought the second empty train down into the yard.  It was still sitting there a few hours ago waiting on a CSX crew.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Alex! That is some

Thanks Alex! That is some great information.

What do you know about the smaller  industries served? I know about the two big grain mills but that seems to be to large to model.
