Let’s have some fun.  Post your own "Why is it that..............?" to share the laughs..........

Why is it that........

-acrylic paint never seems to stick well on brass locomotives but I need to use acetone to get it off my shiny chrome airbrush?

-you crawl under your layout to make some adjustments and the tool you need is sitting on just out of reach on top?

-you can never find your NMRA clearance gauge when you need it now!?

Why is it...

...when you begin to model a specific train, all of the previously-cheap locos and cars for it are going for uranium-level-prices on eBay?

...wheels will derail and couplers will fail to stay coupled, but only when you have an audience or operators present?

...if you start then put away a kit for a rainy day, you can find all of the pieces except one?

Title is click bait - please fix.

The title doesn't give the reader a clue as to what the topic is about.  Please fix the title.

First off it’s sort of supposed to be click bait and second.....

....... I can’t figure out how to edit after someone replies.

There’s always someone on this forum to complain about a post, sheesh, get over it!

Joe can fix your title for you.  He has done it in the past.  Two wrongs don't make a right.  This is my last post here.

Mr. Fitch, you are entitled to your opinion for sure........

........and moved on. See, it wasn’t that hard was it?
If no one participates, that’s fine. If people do, we’ll share some laughs, like the gentlemen who posted before you.

Why is it ?

that as soon as you spend a month scratch building something you've wanted for decades three companies announce they are producing it for less than your material costs? ......DaveB

And its related corollary:

...if they have created a model of your interested railroad, why is it never in the paint scheme that would fit your era or region?

How true is that?!

I’m in O scale so it doesn’t happen as much but I feel your pain.

Why is it...

...after a manufacturer produces the exact locomotive model and paint scheme you need, they upgrade the tooling or electronics in the next release?

cf. Athearn Genesis GP39-2, one of the last two product releases that featured the original Tsunami decoder or the 8-pin/9-pin Quick-Plug, and 1.5v light bulbs. I'm upgrading my 4th of these models right now...

Manufacturers Live feeds

Why is it.....

that every time a model manufacturer hosts a live feed on Facebook or YouTube or ( anything) it always turns into a “why don’t you make X painted in Y scheme?” Chat? How come no one wants to talk modeling, or what went into the research or design? No one talks about the hosts modeling efforts on their layouts. No one wants to find out more about the company and the actual people involved in the decision making and production.

It’s just make this, make that, your stuff is too expensive, your stuff is the wrong scale with bad decoders. We have an amazing opportunity to chat with some neat people. The wizards are actually showing you what’s behind the curtain, yet everyone gripes that they don’t make a certain product.

I am very happy the hosts can screen out the trolls and continue to create these weekly/monthly shows.

I agree with your sentiments.  Fortunately when I watch the recordings I'm cleaning the house or something else and my attention is spread elsewhere.

But if you want to see those questions asked, please do so.  You're not the only one who would appreciate that kind of discussion.

Why is is that the balky

Why is is that the balky turnout is always the one you install in the least accessible place? Also, why is that that "Murphy" wasn't given sainthood?

Ah, Murphy, he seems to be....

.....my best friend most days!

Why is it that you invariable find the tool you lost 3 years ago two days after biting the bullet and buying a new one!

Oh well, 2 is better than none.

Question: everyone has a tool they always loose.  What's yours?  Mine is my NMRA clearance gauge!

Why is it that...

Doom and gloom topics about the hobby's demise balloon to dozens of responses, but posts with actual modeling often drop out of the first couple pages like a stone?

Most often lost tool for me

Most often lost tool for me would be a close contest between my X-acto knife and my Dikes. I have multiple ones of each and it's a rotating cast of which ones I might be able to find when I need them.

@Joe Atkinson

Because 1) Doom and Gloom topics are like a train wreck--you say you hate them, but everyone watches it anyway, and 2) it's more open-ended, allowing everyone to express the opinion that everyone has on the topic.

Why is it...

...when the manufacturer finally produces something you like/need, it is always the longest delayed in the manufacturing process?

Every thread with "insulfrog" or "unifrog" in the title is clickbait that turns immediately into a rant about shorts caused by out-of-spec wheelsets - even though the ranters haven't checked their wheelsets and don't know that they actually would have a problem.

Why is it that..................

That I do my due diligence before making purchases but upon arrival I find some reason or excuse on why that "important and needed item" can't be used, at least not in the short term. Therefore it is set aside for days, weeks, months and sadly sometimes years.

Exactly!!! Glad I’m not the only one who feels this way.

Why is it that... it only snows or rains when I have to work outside? Stupid weather.

Why is it that...

Tools disappear when you need them?  They want friends!  That's the only reason I can think of, to have no less than 4 25' tape measures.

Murphy ... must be the Western name for the Norse god Loki.  He is such a close companion of the family, that my daughter refers to yet another encounter with misfortune as "a visit from Cousin M"...

Paul, the folks of the DelMarVa should get together and airlift this shed I bought, seven months ago, into the backyard, so the unending precipitation will cease.  The seller can't finish the contract, because the truck has sunk to the axles each time they try to site said shed in the yard.

You can probably guess what it's doing outside this morning.

scale

… the thing you so badly want on your layout is made in every other scale but yours?

… the hobby shop owners and distributors will tell you that a certain item always flew off the shelves and they could never keep them in stock, yet the manufacturer stopped making them anyway?

... your desire for something on your layout is always inversely proportionate to your ability and talent to make or modify to your standard?

and the biggest of all:

… almost nobody will make an accurate looking scale deciduous tree you can place out of the box that doesn't cost more than a real one (and never will be larger than a moderate sized tree in HO)?

Why is it that......

Rivet counters feel compelled to tell me that the bettendorf  trucks are not right for my N SCALE boxcars? It's N Scale!!!!!! If you are looking that close at my N scale you need to leave!

All ops geeks seem to need a second job or they wouldn't want all that paperwork? Use a simpler system!

@jbird, that’s a good one.......

Reminds me of “why is it that” when you model O scale and you visit a club with an N scale layout you think it’s Z scale!! LOL. The rivet counter guy must have really good eyes to see what kind of trucks you have under your cars!!!!

Sooo...you don't like other people pushing their hobby views on you, but...

...you're okay with doing the same to those whose views you don't understand?

Seems reasonable.

I'm one of those ops geeks who enjoys using paperwork, because...

  1. My prototype uses it
  2. Their system is simple
  3. I'm in this hobby because I think it's fun to replicate my prototype, and that fun doesn't stop with the equipment and facilities alone.
