Hello, I am wanting an opinion on the blue back drop I have painted here in the picture. I just followed an example I saw in a how to book but I’m not sure if it looks the best. Should I have stopped the edge of the backdrop right at the edge of the shelf layout; should it go all the way to the ceiling? I ran one side all the way to the window and the other side into the corner of where the other wall is. You can’t see it but there is a closet door that swings open and that is one reason the shelf stops short . I plan to put a 3 ft removable extension cassette ( just a 4 inch wide board with one track) there, but it won’t lay right up against the wall as the main shelf does. I’m planning on adjusting the height of the layout by about 3.5 inches higher, so that might be a good time to redo the backdrop.

My suggestions

Actually it looks real nice and is fine as is.

 I have two suggestions.

1.  The height of the backdrop looks good as is but you mentioned raising the layout. I find that backdrop height is optimum at 24" high above top of narrow shelf layout. Not too much but still high enough for viewing and photography.

2. That electrical has got to be re-routed and painted with the wall color.

Nice touch Rick.

I appreciate that you did the photo editing for me to give me a clear idea of what would look best; it looks really good that way.

Strictly my preference but I

Strictly my preference but I would end my back drop at the edges of the bench  work. I'd also cove that corner if I could. it looks great though, a very solid start. If it's one thing I've learned in my many years in the hobby, it's that presentation is everything and that looks like a very nice space.

coving the corner

Could also be a good way to hide the wire up to the lights? .....DaveB

Click on the above, and it will take you to one method of doing that. 1/4 inch drywall could also work.

I'd to up to the ceiling with the blue.  Later on you may end up with a taller structure or be taking pictures and hit the end if your blue backdrop.  If it goes up to the ceiling that's not an issue.

Another vote for

ending the sky at the edge of the layout.   Just my opinion........sky to the ceiling might make the whole thing look top heavy.  You probably know what you want for the tallest structure now, so definitely make the sky over the top of that.

Thanks guys

Thanks for the comments. The layout sits at 52” right now and I believe I want to move it up 3.5 inches to get it to more armpit level, I’m 6’4”. I definitely think I will end the back drop at the edges of the layout this time.
