Just checked in with the developers who are building the program to move this forum to the new site forum.mrhmag.com and they tell me they're about ready to port the file I sent them back in October and then open it up for testing. They're projecting sometime in early February for this to be done. Once it's ready then you will be welcome to go over there and try it out. Part of the port includes moving all the registered members, so anyone who has been here since October 2020 should have a login over there! We will keep you posted.

This forum says I've been a member for 10 years.. (Wow!)

Or did you mean to say "members that are new from Oct 2020-Jan 2021 should have an account already, while Sept 2020- beginning of time haven't been moved over yet.

Post references

Will they convert post references if at least on a thread level? Such, at least if someone has a link in a post to a specific reply/entry on page X of another post on the current forum, that it will at minimum links to page 1 entry/reply 1 of the converted other thread on the new forum.

Will they have a translation table available that can be configured on the site so someone going to "https://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/node/41737" will get a "301 permanently moved" redirect to the converted thread on forum.mrhmag.com?

Lots of questions still

There's lots of questions still about all this. One thing they're going to provide is a list of all old links and new links in a file, so we can make 301s for all those. But as to answers on how this or that works, we'll need to get a port of this forum and have folks start kicking the tires to feret out all the questions and issues we need to solve.

Joe said that they won't have it completed until Feb.

I suspect that they are moving the last registered members first and working back to those of us here from day 1.  I think the oldtimers need to be patient while the new site is being built.

He said it'll be done in February.

Specifically ...

Specifically, some time in February we will let everyone know the October copy of the forum has been stood up and is available to kick the tires. This will be for test purposes only and anything you post will get deleted once we migrate for real, a date to be determined depending on how many problems we find with this migration test.

Joe, more or less sub-forums

Joe, more or less sub-forums on the new site?

Personally, I've found less to be more.  People seem to gravitate to the pages that get the action and completely avoid others.  There can be swing too far the other direction, too, but sub-forums that have the action from the past 2-5 days on the first page seems to be a nice medium to me.

URL?

I know its mid-February and you have had all sorts of problems this month, but should I be able to at least access the forum site even if I can not login?

I get this error trying forum.mrhmag.com:

Quote:

This site can’t be reached

The webpage at https://forum.mrhmag.com/ might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.

ERR_HTTP2_INADEQUATE_TRANSPORT_SECURITY

Now when I try forums.mrhmag.com I get Under construction, please come back later.

Until we give the official word, it's not available

February was a best guess and not definite. From the latest email we got from the developers, they're still working through some final issues. Better say March for now, and until we give an official HEY IT'S HERE message, this is only a best guess and not something you can count on. With all the weather outages right now, I would not count on anything.

Here's one for the testers to check

Hi Joe and team

Here's one for our tyre-kickers to check out on the new forum before it goes live.

When quoting a thread with a photo in it, the photo does not appear in the "quote" area of the new message after posting. It used to  But this now appears to be broken on the current forum.  for example

In my " Timebomb defused" message  I quoted part of an earlier message  https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/corrimal-colliery-and-its-incline-a-different-slant-on-rails-12206968 that contained a photo of Mount Kembla that is stored on the MRH server at  https://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/sites/model-railroad-hobbyist.com/files/users/Oztrainz/P1300054a.jpg The "Timebomb defused" message appeared with space left for the photo, but with the photo not displayed. If you clicked on where the photo was supposed to be, then the photo opened in a different tab as   https://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/sites/model-railroad-hobbyist.com/files/users/Oztrainz/P1300054a.jpg

It appears that the link to the image is not being called to cause it to display as expected in the correct spot of the quote area.

Latest on the forum migration

I sent the programmers a fresh copy of this forum two weeks ago and they're working on loading it. Once they get it loaded, they will let us know and we will make it available for you all to go test out. We expect to find some bugs, so we will report those to the programmers and then they can make fixes. Once we're happy with the new forum migration test, then we will do the migration for real. We'll likely lock down this forum, make a copy of the database for the developers, then load up the new forum. Once the new forum is live, visiting the forum on this site will simply forward you to forum.mrhmag.com and this site's forum will no longer be available. Any old links to forum entries will auto-forward to the new forum and the post over there.

Mock update now scheduled

The programmers have corrected the problems we found in the first test and they're now ready to do a mock conversion test. At 2pm on Friday, May 28, we will take a backup of the current forum and send that to the programmers. They will perform the conversion with the idea that the new forum site is up and ready to go by Monday, May 31. Assuming we find no big ugly errors, we will then schedule the real conversion to take place on June 4-6, with the new site going live on Monday, June 7th. We will lockdown the old site on Friday, June 4th at 2pm Pacific (5pm Eastern). You will be able to read the old forum but you won't be able to post to it. Then if all goes well, we will replace the old forum links with the new forum as of 8 am Pacific, Monday, June 7th. The old forum will then cease to exist, having been totally replaced by the new forum. We will maintain a backup of the old forum on a local computer in the MRH offices for reference for a few months. Once we no longer need the old forum backup at all, we will delete it for good.

requirements for individuals?

So what are the requirements for individuals hoping to maintain their history of posting to the old forum?

...some sort of blog list, etc??

Will the system still log us off?

One thing that is annoying is when the website logs me off because I have been on for too long.  Will that be the same on the new site?

Question about photos

Hi Joe,

I saw something somewhere about how photos will be migrated but can't find it now. (Something about saving them 1 at a time or something similar??)

I have a fair few photos (probably 100 - I haven't counted them up) in the file server area against my name. So to the questions:

  1. do I need to do anything about my photos in the file server before the upgrade? If so, what do i need to do?
  2. the new forum has album capabilities - If I move a photo from where it lands after the migration and then if I try to add the photo to an album will it destroy the link to where it has been posted?
  3. The position for me is probably more complicated than most because I my have used the same photo in multiple posts to demonstrate different things eg photos of my Jaxcilliest Enterprise small layout have been used in 3 different postings that I know of (and there may be another 1 or 2 places I've forgotten) If I add an existing photo to an album and it breaks the links to multiple posts, how will I know where all he links are broken so i can fix them (assuming I'm allowed to posts that have existed for a considerable time)?

That's probably enough stuff or me to check after the migration this weekend,

Regards,

John Garaty

History

What history are you referring too?

All your old posts will be there, even the number of posts you have made.

If you want an index like a table of contents to all your posts you created as blogs, then you need to create it here on the old forum to get it transferred. If this is what you are referring to check out:  https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/joe-fugates-blog-index-12218221, be sure to read the first comment. Note this index is only to the original post you created as blog posts, not topic posts at least as far as I can tell.

If you want the history available here under account -> track page, will have to see if the next upload/conversion includes that change as the old conversion did not.

On the new forum there is a + following feature so you can look at activity on all threads you follow, any you create on the new forum or post too will automatically be added to threads you follow as I recall.

Is the migration to the New Forum software still on?

Is there a new date for the migration to the New Forum software still on in spite of all the roadblocks (COVID etc.,.) The demise of the black edges limiting line length and the current photo upload process will be welcome.

No date yet

No date yet, we need to get caught up on other tasks first. Expect to get back to reviewing the new forum software after the August issue gets out. From there we will set a date for the more, likely September.
