I ordered a Blair Line loading dock and loading ramp kit and they got here today and I assembled them tonight. This is the idea I had for the area in front of what is now known as "Olroy Feed and Farm Supply Co." I had originally envisioned them arranged as in the first picture but I'm not sure that I don't like the long narrower version in the second picture. I could also use the docks somewhere else and do something entirely different here but I'm leaning this way. I figure a nice field of static grass, the docks and not much else. Thoughts on arrangement and other ideas are welcome.

That is Awesome Michael!!!

That is Awesome Michael, the Long style supply store i think is perfect there are alot of details that can be put in such as each Freight door  could be dedicated to each department the feed store offers,.. look forward to seeing more ..R

3rd option

Build an L shape, with 2 and the ramp along the track like the 2nd picture and the 3rd one at a right angle at the end of the track to unload end door boxcars.

That gives you a destination for a unique type of car AND requires you to turn the car to properly have teh end door against the dock.

Applied some wash and another option

I added some color and took a first pass at weathering. I used a water based acrylic wash sparingly and I keep weight on wood structures like this while drying so they don't warp. Another arrangement option. I kind of like this one. Is this what you're getting at Dave?

The dock?

Do you have a planned use for the loading dock? Differnt cargo would have different ideal configurations. For instance auto unloading would require an end ramp for end door cars or a wider side ramp for cars unloaded out the side doors. A typical team track would not have a ramp as most things can just be hand unloaded out of the car doors into a waiting truck backed up to the car. ....DaveB

L revisited

No, I was thinking an end lading ramp that would be at the END of the tracks, but one ramp section isn't long enough to do that so it wouldn't work in any case.

The long parallel one would be good if you want mostly boxcars to be spotted at the team track.  The configuration you have is good  if you moved it a bit to the right, so the right end is about a half car, 15-20 ft, from the end of the track.   That would allow cars to be unloaded, but trucks could have access from the road to back up against the "crossways" dock section.   That way trucks wouldn't have to access the area in the corner of the fascia.

This is what I originally had in mind, but it won't work with your docks.

That would allow you to unload these boxcars, an example posted by DesertDrover, but once again that idea won't work with your docks.

Hi Dave, can you clarify what you are saying a bit? Looks like plenty enough ramp material  to make an end ramp. It would require shortening the spur some though. The vehicles  would need space to drive down the ramp then turn off to the side...DaveB

For clarification

There are a total two structure pieces involved. The ramp piece doesn't come lose at the seam in the decking even though it looks as if it might.

I like these kits a lot, they are very easy and quick to build and I have pondered what could be done with several of one or both varieties with more space available The idea here though is to put something low profile  in this space and have justification for one of the spurs since the Feed and Supply is actually probably not big enough to justify one spur, much less two. That's a problem a lot of us have with the size of most model railroad industries. I don't lose sleep over such things but I do like to have some sort of back story for why things are as they appear. My thought is a town team track with all manner of different sized cargo being loaded and unloaded there. Possibly larger items like farm machinery. I may add some sort of hoist frame and a block and tackle to give the impression of heavier items being handled, I don't know yet. I'm still in my "imagineering" phase of how this whole scene plays out. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to use static grass in this area around the dock to suggest a field and I want to use some type of fencing detail in the scene but other than that the scene is very fluid at this point. I think I've pretty much ruled out the configuration in the first picture and now I'm torn between the long straight configuration or the L. I like the scenic possibilities of them both.

The straight arrangement

The straight arrangement turns out to be the best I think considering how the boxcars line up on the dock, how the ramp lines up with the entrance road and the way I still have that nice little piece of open space in front to play with as a detail area. Now I just need to establish exactly where I want the dock on the spur and then cut away a little roadbed and ballast to get it a bit closer to the trackDock%204.jpg

Todays work

I set the dock in place and did some limited scenic work. The green fine ground foam is to help me visualize what will eventually be static grass. I'm running out of excuses not to build or buy an applicator.

Grass or gravel?

If that is a loading dock and trucks/wagons back up to the dock to load or unload, should there be grass there or should that be dirt/gravel where the horse is?

It's just a first pass

I brought the road in using the same fine gray powder I've used for roads elsewhere and hit things with the green ground foam just to refresh what I had put down with my base scenery coat because it had gotten kind of shoddy looking with the  inactivity on the layout and the scenery work in adjacent areas. You can kind of see that in the first pics of the uncolored dock. There will be at least another couple of layers to it and grave/dirt/grass proportions and what covers what and where will change. It could end up almost all dirt and gravel. Also, I'm out of the ground foam I normally use for my base dirt color. I just stuck the horse there for the picture. I'm still composing the scene. I've got a wagon and a truck kit to build still and I just ordered some three rail fence to maybe use places here and elsewhere.

should that be dirt/gravel where the horse is?

The horse by the dock reminds me of a story an old SP conductor told me. Back in the 50's they stopped at a packing shed and picked up some reefers. As they pulled the cut out thru the switch to  the main they saw a cow running alongside the last car. Seems someone had tied the cow to the stirrup step of the last car so it could graze on the grass growing around the spur. ....DaveB

Great story

I can picture that scene perfectly. I managed to coax the horse to move a bit and had the construction crew bring in another load of gravel...%20scene.jpg
