While driving home today in the country, I was taken by how many things are made from galvanized steel.  Especially grain bins and guardrails. It is a particular dull grey.  What color paint do you prefer to represent galvanized weathered steel?

Vallejo London Gray

I’ve been using Vallejo London Gray for brush painting galvanized steel and then lighten it and dry brush the tops of the ridges for depth.   You can also prime the piece with a light gray and use the Vallejo London Gray as a wash to stay in the lower areas.

Rust-oleum Chalked Aged Grey

give the Rust-oleum chalked aged grey a try. I have been using it lately and have been happy with the results. Start with a sprayed base coat (I use a spray tin) and then some various washes of rusty shades.

Using Vallejo as a wash.

I should go into a little more detail on my image of the roof. This is a close up on a resin kit made by Frenchman River. I initially sprayed the building with Tamiya Light Grey primer and then used Vallejo London Gray as a wash.  On other buildings on the layout, such as the feed mills or elevators that are covered with Evergreen corrugated plastic sheet I used the London Gray straight out of the bottle.  The roof photo shows a little rust streaking; I used water based oils to replicate those.  Hope this helps.

For rolling stock, I am using a few shades of Alclad, combined with specific undercoats and salt weathering.

If it helps,

I used to work for a company that made stairs for most of the grain bins out there.

I've always just done some form of silver, then weather it slightly with a gray wash.

Best color?

Since it varies so much I'd start with a photo of the prototype I'm trying to match then see what color I can find that gives the best match . Could be anything from silver to rust brown or a mixture of colors somewhere in between the two extremes....DaveB

Gray

The different suggestions of gray are all good choices.  The silver base with gray wash is something I have not tried so can’t comment on that.
