Kirk W kirkifer

Gang,

I am looking for some unique pics. I want to model two things. First, I want tracks either on one border or bisecting a public park. Second, I want a different scene where tracks do the same thing with a cemetery. I know there are plenty of examples such as the Indianapolis line passing Symmes Park in Hamilton, Ohio.  I also vaguely remember a line in Green Bay, Wisconsin that either went through a cemetery or very close to one.

This picture is from Nashville, Tennessee.

The most I can do is confirm

The most I can do is confirm that you're not completely crazy - in Green Bay (specifically/technically Allouez), CNW was just north of Woodlawn while MILW was parallel to Woodlawn and - I think it's just Allouez Cemetery or something like that. CNW line is still there as part of CN, but MILW got pulled around the time WC took over.  Also gone is the GBW track through town (which abutted Ft Howard Park up by the CNW/McDonald yards) and Seymour Park next to Norwood.

How about both?

How about both? The NS Atlanta North End passes both a park and a cemetery in quick succession in Rockmart, GA.

And in some places...funeral trains

Hi Kirkifer, all,

In some places there were dedicated trains, tracks and stations for the funeral traffic & mourners. Locally, New South Wales Government Railways ran funeral trains from 2 major cities to large cemeteries further out from the city centre. In Sydney, funeral trains ran from the ornate stone Mortuary Station near Sydney's Central station to a matching stone station at Rookwood cemetery. Further north in Newcastle, funeral trains ran from Newcastle station to Sandgate cemetery. The facilities at Sandgate were far more basic than those at Rookwood. In both cases major main lines border one edge of both cemeteries.

These scheduled trains consisted of hearse vans to move the coffins and several passenger cars to move the mourners to and from these cemeteries. After the funeral train service to Rookwood ended, the Rookwood station was dismantled, moved 150 miles south to Canberra, and re-erected as a church.

In London, the Necropolis railway ran from 1854 until WW2 from near Waterloo station to Brookwood Cemetery,  and, yes, it has been modelled. A bomb hit to the Necropolis station ended that service.

I have no doubt that this type of funeral service was run many places elsewhere in the world,

John Garaty

I Had Heard Of The

Necropolis Railway in England, but had no idea funeral trains were that common in Australia. Were tremendous numbers of people dying, or were there logistical reasons?

Pennsylvania Railroad through the trench

In Pittsburgh Pennsylvania the PRR ran through originally Allegheny City's West Park (Allegheny was later merged into the city of Pittsburgh) This was part of the original Fort Wayne Railroad and the main line through the city. "The Trench" is a favorite spot for rail fans to grab shots of trains passing below grade through the park. To this day the trench is still home to four tracks. The grand cement foot bridge over the tracks connecting both sides of the park is gone now. It was unsafe, since then it has been part of a decade long war between the citizens and Norfolk Southern on double stack clearance that would according to the citizens change the landscape of the 200yr old park.

Florida East Coast

The FEC runs through/alongside at least two golf courses in Florida:

-Miami Shores in Miami-Dade County

Couldn't find any videos or photos but here is a drone tour of the course where you can see the mainline beside several of the holes:

The mainline also runs through a course in Daytona Beach.  Here is a video FEC Train 101.  Remember that GEVO's will always get to play through:

Iron Horse golf course

Municipal golf course of North Richland Hills, TX.  I guess named after the excursion steam train that ran down the middle.  It is now a light rail line from Fort Worth to DFW airport, and the steam engine sits on display.

Cemetary, Park, Warehouse, double track main

In Winchester, MA there’s a double track rail line bordered on one side by a cemetary and a park, and directly opposite is a warehouse which seems to use rail service on and off (currently it seems to be in an off period).

The railroad is I believe owned by the MBTA (it’s the Lowell line in commuter rail terms), and Pan Am Railways services the frieght customers.

Two that are no longer there

The Rock Island's Keokuk & Des Moines used to run through South Park in Pella, Iowa.  The Southern Iowa Railway (electric) ran through a golf course near Centerville, Iowa.

Light rail

In San Diego, the Orange Line light rail route of the San Diego Trolley runs between Home of Peace and Mount Hope cemeteries. The two cemeteries are between 36th Street and the Interstate 805 freeway.

Funeral trains - Sydney

John,

You missed the one nearest you: Woronora Cemetery at Sutherland.

Cemeteries around Sydney were located far from the city centre and mourners could not be expected to walk the distance, so rail transport was provided in the early days.

After WW2 cheap vehicles became available and the rail services ceased both in Sydney and Newcastle.

Thanks Ian

Thanks Ian,

I didn't know about Woronora cemetery at Sutherland, so thank you for that and the links. But I suppose I should have guessed that there might have been another, given that this Woronora cemetery is within 2 blocks of Sutherland station.

It's nice to pick up new knowledge. I'll look at things slightly differently next time I'm driving through the western side of Sutherland, past the cemetery's front fence,

One More

The East Broad Top railroad ran through the cemetery in Shirleysburg PA. It still does, in fact, but there has been no traffic on those rails since 1956.

Logistics

The roads in the mid 1860s to the Haslem's Creek Necropolis were such that a horse-drawn funeral procession would take days to arrive from any of the churches in Sydney, the only way around this was a railway.

The one in Newcastle remained for some time because the station was a frequently-used commuting stop, so the NSWGR didn't have to specially build much infrastructure in the area. It hadn't carried a body for decades by then, but they were still running specials out there to visit graves well into the early '80s.

Now:

You may be able to trace the path of the spur.

Battelle Darby Creek Metro park

Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park here in Columbus, Ohio, has the Camp Chase Railroad running through it.  The track crosses high over one of the paths when it is on the bridge over Battelle Darby Creek while still in the park.  That crossing is one of the most Iconic parts of the park.

Officially checked by General Greenstar, leader of the White Lion Railways, and the White Lion himself.

Brunswick Maine

Here are a couple of quick pictures of the former Maine Central (now CMQR) lower road mainline through my home of Brunswick, Maine. The line bisects the town green. I plan to include this in my under construction layout. Wish there were more kits of New England houses.

CP in Milwaukee.

Here's Milwaukee's Holy Trinity / St Adabert cemetery with a double-track mainline.  Now Canadian National, originally Milwaukee Road's Chicago-Milwaukee line.

Actually, it's the CP on the former MILW. main., not CN. This line also hosts the Amtrak Empire Builder, and the Milwaukee/Chicago Hiawatha service.

The Trench

Got out for a walk after this weeks snow event.

West bound in the trench.

The former PRR Ft. Wayne line and the Conemaugh lines make up the four tracks splitting the citys West Park in half. Right behind where I stand was a pedestrian bridge connecting the two sides. It has since been removed due to safety issues. Currently NS, the City of Pittsburgh, and the Historical Society are at war over the new bridge.

Honestly I hope the City/Historical Society wins this one.
