I noticed lately that the photos I post loose some definition for some reason. I haven't changed my method of creating them or posting them yet they do not loose some definition when I post them on other websites.

Here is an example of it the a photo posted on this forum

7735(1).jpeg

And the same one taken from another site that I posted it on.

Neither photo has been modified on my end.

Yeah,

It seems that the site's compression methods really do a lot of damage to large photos. I've been fighting this for quite a while. I have been using PNG images for years now as that is what works best for photo laminating modeling but they get dramatically softened on MRH. About six months ago I started experimenting and found that if I pre-compress my PNG images to JPEG / Lanczos 3 at 1600 horizontal before uploading/ then sizing to 750 the forum handles the image better.......not perfect but at least better.

Size

I usually resize my photos I display on MRH to 700 pixels in width, that eliminates the MRH app from resizing them.

700 pixel size

I thought from the beginning that this was the acceptable sizing for photos posted on this forum,...to save bandwidth. We are fortunate to be able to post photos here,...some sites want you to utilize a third part site,...a pain in the you know what.

. . .

Your first image is  :   26.86 KB (27,500 bytes)  -  640px × 525px

Your second image is :   48.51 KB (49,678 bytes) -  640px × 359px

So it has lost 166 pixels but is twice the byte count. So uploading to this site is stripping data

IF I copy these image to my system and look at details the first was done on Apple ipad pro at 72 dpi. The second is a screen capture at 141dpi. Both are bit depth 24

This image I upload is    24KB  -   498 X 181   bit depth 24,   reso 181 dpi  JPG

How did it turn out once uploaded (cut and paste to thread direct).

Amusing  the site says the image is 120kb   -  498 X 181  and converted to a PNG file. If I take this image and copy it back to this computer it is 120kb - 498 X 181  and at 32 bit depth.

I take it and drop it into the original JPG to compare (side by side, in PAINT)  and see no noticeable difference

What does it all prove  !.. no idea : -)

What does it prove?

It proves that we are all likely to be a lot happier when the new forums come on-line.

Resize first

I resize the image down to 750 wide first before uploading and there’s never a problem with quality degradation. Letting this sites 10+ year old code resize your image is bound to degrade it, of that I have no doubt. That’s why we’re moving to a brand new up-to-date site.

test

I prefer to load a 1600 image so the viewer can expand it to full (at least for the forum software) resolution.

750 x 5590%20x%20.jpg

1600 x 1192 (displaying at reduced resolution)  Select the photo to expand to full resolution.

01192(1).jpg

CLARITY TEST BELOW

Top. 750............   Middle 1600 reduced by forum............bottom 1600 viewed at full resolution.

The test shows that the image uploaded at 750 is better than a 1600 image reduced in size by the forum. The 1600 image viewed at full resolution is the best, and is the only one where some of the letters can be identified.....albiet just barely.

Thanks to you all I figured

Thanks to you all I figured out what to do and not to do.

Now I take the photo with the iPad and make sure I email it to my computer selecting medium size and it appears to work.

Great test

Great test, thanks Rick! You'll have to try that same test out on the new forum. The programmers are still working on the migration software. No doubt they have their hands full, there's a LOT of stuff on here to migrate and I'm sure they're finding bugs and have to make coding changes and try it again. We just need to be patient, I told them I prefer correct over fast.
