In Joe's publication, "MRH-Acrylic-painting-guide-post-Floquil", he mentioned that he used MG Chemicals Alcohol wipes for cleaning paint bottle tops and caps among other things.  With the pandemic, these disappeared and have not re-appeared.

Does anyone found a good substitute?  I've spent quite a bit of time looking for something similar, but have not found anything.

Thanks,

Greg

never needed Wipes

Greg,

First thing I do w/jars of either kind of paints oil base or acrylic,  is drop 2 B-B's in the jar for better shake up.

Close lid only after wiping jar rim off and add 2 drops of water or paint thinner depending on paint being using.

If needed,  will use paint thinner w/old white handkerchief from my paint cleaner and syringe box.

Make your own wipes

If you shop around at Walmart, you can find bottles of 70% isopropyl alcohol now for under $2. Just keep a roll of toilet paper at your workbench, tear off a couple squares, fold it up, and wet it with a bit of alcohol -- instant homemade alcohol wipe for cheap. If you search around online, you can find alcohol wipes going for about 10 cents per wipe, far more costly now thanks to the pandemic. They used to be less than a penny a wipe.

Back to paper towels

Yep, back to using paper towels with alcohol.  I really miss the convenience of pulling a wipe out and using it - no muss, no fuss.

Hey Joe are Model Railroader’s responsible

for the tp and isopropanol shortage?  I wondered if they saw that time in the cellar or garage was going to increase and stocked up.....

The cut up paper towel idea works great.  I’ve used it for painting with acrylics by putting a piece on a plastic lid, wet it with a little distilled water and then dripped the paint onto it.  It keeps the paint useable longer.  The small squares can be used to clean up after.  Any solvent that is applicable works.
