I previoulsy posted about yet another move to Toronto with my portable Ontario South Central. This is now the 4th location. If you follow my blogs I wrote about a small switching layout that fits into a Condo living space satisfying the missus.

Well, we've broken up, and I had to move to the burbs and had my layout in a room in a town house.

I've moved back to Toronto and the Ontario South Central is back up and running. The idea initialy was to have a moveable layout. Foamular with 1 x 2's does the trick. Foamular is tough and light. You don't need a hollow core door. And luckily..with all the condo construction here in Toronto..I normally get a sheet for free! Just ask..I had one sitting in my condo lobby waiting for me after running errands from asking a construction worker!

So, I put up a post about my initial move in and shelving options. And there were some good ideas presented. 1 was about the 'Fast track' shelving. I love it. It would be great as I could have a valance with lighting overhead.

One problem.. it costs a shite load of money.

So..in a moment of clarity..I went to the trusty IKEA website (read:cheap) and found my solution. A Galvanized shevling unit that was the perfect height to put my layout on. 55". Shoulder height!/ eyel evel.

So we are good to go. I've got the Ontario South Central straddling two of the IKEA 'Hyliss' shelves and am working on the corner to the staging. see trackplan.

And here's some initial construction pics after setting up the IKEA Hyliss shelving.

Staging:

As someone noted, I have a lovely curve in the wall for the backdrop.

I'll keep y'all abreast on the layouts new location.

cheers and stay safe.

With the two staging tracks arranged

this way you will only be able to pull cars that go to the lone industry at the lower right of your layout.  By joining the staging tracks on the end you can run around those cars and shove them to the four tracks going to the left.  You will loose one storage track creating this run around and may need to add another stub end track in staging.

Yes, I am considering a runaround at the staging. Before most of my industries were another 3' at the left of the track plan hence the broken off look at the end of the layout in the photo at the door (first photo). The transfer facility at right was the only one facing the other direction. The middle track of the 4 is a backtrack with storage capabilities. The turnout is problematic and i'm replacing them as I go but I can store cars there. Also the staging can be a fiddle arrangment as my railroad only handles a few cars at a time for delivery. Nice thing about modeling a shortline is that you can be accurate with car volume!

Thanks for the suggestion.

Also...

I will consider adding a runaround in the staging yard, anther is room for another track for storage. The local would indeed pull the cars for the facility at the bottom right portion of the 'main' layout (tank crs and cylindrical hoppers - industry yet to be determined) and for the Plastics plant at the top, the job will switch cars from the adjacent track set out the night prior from CN which I normally interchange with. That said, I can include CN power shoving from staging as well to perform this manouver giving more operation than my lone G&W unit.

We're on the move again!

Waiting on word of my new living arrangements. And in good timing MRH put up this thread:  https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/smallminiature-layout-track-plan-database16-sq-ft-or-less-12207144 with thanks!

Time to tear down the corner river landscaped portion leading to the staging tracks I just was working on without tracks layed luckily! But it's all easily removable resting of shelf brackets. This time the modules don't go in the truck with everything else but safely transported in a car! There was a wee bit of structural damage.

I'll keep you abreast on what happens next. I'm happy with the IKEA Galvanized shevling the layout initially rests on. And cheap too.. $16.99 cdn each or the two! I like the plan of the track system I presented here but it is way beyond my budget for now. I'm currently 3 stories up on a narrow staircase with a quick 45 degree turn into the place (helluva move in). But! I don't think I need to dissamble the shelves.

Bye for now,

Brad

Living now in The Junction Area of Toronto!!

So i've just been accepted to move into The Junction area of Toronto. Actually the first area I lived in Toronto moving from the Burbs 20 Years ago. I'm just a hop away from CP Lambton Yard and the Galt/MacTier/North Toronto subs respectively. The room is a generous size that I can fit the Ontario South Central in to amongst my audio work station requirements.

The nice thing about having a 55" layout from the floor it rides above everything. Btw..the IKEA Hyliss shelving.. the light weight but durable galvanized shelves are 55" from the floor!! I couldn't believe it and again they come in cheap. $16.99 cdn. I bought two. No need to dissamble at that death trap of a staircase they currently reside!

I'll update how the railroad will fit in but I have a pretty good idea I composed on Photoshop to exact dimensions and scale.

cheers,

Push - Pull operation

Two add to my staging 'issue', with no runaround, I was just reading how CN operates their switching of an industry at Cainsville, ON out of Brantford, ON with an engine on both ends for a push pull operation. My staging is actually CN and i've never seen or heard CN do this in prototype. So this further enhances operation with more interest on my layout!

Wondering...

As I type from my 'new' location in Toronto. Not the 'Hell-hole' I lived in stated above. The temperatures in the Summer were so bad, with no A/C, i'm sure the track work would have suffered as well other hot temperature issues. The 'Hell-Hole' also had Satan as roommate to match and I risked my life moving in and out with under code stairwell and apartment entry! Hence the move. Anyone reading..please move on to the next 'location blog' - the 5th! 'New location in The Junction, Toronto'. An area equipped with a history of railroading and great for railfans alike!

But I look at the track plan, and how I situated the railroad in the room, with my other furnishings and work station, I scratch my head why I chose that wall!! I had to saw off the end eliminating two industries to accomodate the door. Goes to show my head was not in the right space in that place!
