Its official I have made it to Kansas and have my own home!  Still setting things up but am happy to have a space of my own for trains and what have you!  Independence Kansas is my new home and glad to be here.  Models are on hold for now but I will be back at it soon.  I have a 10x11 spare room for a workshop, and a 10x20 garage for whatever flights of fancy I can muster.

One note of caution for everyone....while packing I broke my back-up hard drive, no big deal....I thought I would worry about it later, turns out my PC had other ideas...no backup and a defunct PC!  lost everything, my music my photos documents and all my research.....Please make sure you have a back-up( and don't step on it!)

Peace, Bill

Congratulations Bill

Good to see that you have a new home for a layout. I feel your pain on the computer back up situation.....moving all your stuff to a new place seems to often include some collateral damage.

 How about some photos?

Home...

Great news that you now have your own home! Best of luck with it!

Will you be installing an HVAC or something in the garage for year-round comfort?

Watch out during Tornado

Watch out during Tornado season.  I was in southern Indiana for a few years and we had some close calls!

So, now for the nitty gritty.  What is your train room like?

Depending on how important

Depending on how important the data on your computer is to you, it is very likely that it is still there and able to be retrieved. Any computer shop can do a quick diagnostic to see just how damaged it is and how much it would take to recover the data. Send me a PM if you need more info.

Congrats on the new train room!

Congrats on the new train room!

You won't know unless you try! Not trying guarantees poor results. Also check out your computer drive the same way!

hard drive recovery shops - last resort

Congratulations on having your own space!

I also have a semi-trashed drive, it is external.  I plan to send it to a specialized hard drive recovery shop and see what they can rescue. Search, it can be expensive, in my case I think it is worth it.

Thanks everyone....

Rick, no photos yet as I have yet to find my camera and have yet to master cell phone photography....only  had a cell for 4 months and have yet to take a good photo

Andre, HVAC is on the agenda, however oddly enough there are no windows in the garage so some planning may be required ( of course the Spicoli method may happem.."My dad's a carpenter he has a gnarly set of tools!!!"

Jim, so far so good, but always a concern, extra homeowners coverage and a tornado shelter are in the works...I'm joining you in the home improvement game and actually enjoying it!

Soumodeler, Bud, and Doug, data recovery is my likely method the PC's hard drive may be recoverable, but the 2tb portable is not up to my 250lb, and size 14 shoes, its toast!  Hoping I can recover at least some, only time will tell...

Rjthomas, thank you it's great to be here, been through Columbus a few times and always seem to miss the trains, when it cools a bit I'll be out!

Oh well, back to shop class, I mean home repairs!

Peace Bill

@dwilliam1963

I feel your pain having moved twice in the past 5 years - each time after a sizeable investment had been made in a home HO railroad. But I have put my foot down; no more moves unless it involves a move to snow country or a pine box. Sadly though, each move resulted in a down sizing of the available space for THE home railroad.

But I was fortunate here and joined a great local model railroad club with a 3000 sq ft railroad within 20 minutes of my home. And in the space available in our home, I have begun a railroad. While I did use 37 and 40-inch radius curves, it is dual track and predominantly scenery. (It keeps me off the streets)

We are inventive and adaptable so we make the most of what we have available. Good luck and have fun!!

@duckdogger

This is our last move...pine box is the only way out for me!  Oddly we left snow country and came west,  we left Tonawanda (outside Buffalo, NY) on May16th and it had snowed earlier that same week!  Right now I'm just glad to have my own space and want to start to build something, probably a chainsaw layout....model muscles are a tad rusty (so are my home repair muscles!)  so can't wait!

Congrats on the new home!

And a word of advice on backups: always have (at least) two. I have two backup drives, and at least one of them is always somewhere other than in my house.

There are three reasons to have two:

  1. If one fails (or you step on it), you still have the other.
  2. If something catastrophic happens to both your PC and backup at the same time (fire, burglary, etc.), you've got another off-site backup.
  3. If your main drive fails while you're making a backup on your only drive, you've just trashed your only backup.

(Our actual system at home is slightly more complicated than that. All of our PCs back up nightly to a LAN-based drive in the basement, and that is backed up to one of the two portable drives once a week.)

Congratulations

One year ago I moved to Canada.

GRRRR, many box remains to be open, but we are happy to have done this move from Europe to Quebec.

And I have also broke my Hard drive last year, the biggest lost is some pictures.

So now I have two external hard drive and two different back up, this will never happen again.

Good luck

Marc

The tornado thing is real but

After 40 years of living out here its not what I would call something to consume your life with. Our fradie hole is a walk in closet that is surrounded by dirt with only the roof above ground. Been it twice so far and neither time did one come close.

Where abouts are you, I'm in Parkville MO just outside KC, 14 x 44 layout above the garages. Not real active because of health issues, 4 time cancer survivor, but am getting back into it.

Backups....

I plan on another 2tb hard drive and perhaps micro sd cards.  A lot of the music is already backed up on CD's but not all.  Working on it, may get a safe deposit box for the family photos and such....but for now just unpacking and getting together!

Ken, my son lives in Pendleton, and my daughter is in Lockport....I miss them but not New York!

Michael, I have a bathroom with no windows in the center of the house, but we are probably going to get a backyard shelter, sorry about the health issues, but sometimes it just drains you and makes everything twice as hard, been fortunate and God willing will be here to burn the mortgage!

Oh, well back to organizing and cleaning, Happy Fathers Day to all it applies to,

Peace, Bill

Moving

Congratulations on your move Bill and your own home!! Maybe one day for me but i'm from Toronto and it's getting harder and harder for anyone even close to here to do the same. Well done! Maybe I should move to Kansas!!

Moving..yes, we tend to lose things. I just recently moved into a room and I have a recent post about moving my layout 'Ontario South Central' which is in it's 4th home! But unless you do precision packing and logisitstcs read: Pelle Soeberg and the lads from the shop that bought his last layout off him.. https://forum.mrhmag.com/magazine-feedback-was-ezines-891776 there's bound to be some losses. But there are bound to be some gains moving forward.

I do audio work and i've had many a drive go down. Back up, back up, back up...Even give a back up to someone you trust at another location..ie theft, fire, etc... Imagine if I lost a clients files? You can get your files retrieved. It used to cost some but i'm sure the price has come down. Don't quote me on that but i've heard of the fact.

But... now you have a new place.. a blank canvas..to design a new railroad. One of my faourite aspects of the hobby.

So I wish you the best in your new home. Many good memories to come Sir. And we're looking forward to your endeavours.

cheers,

Brad

Hi Bill, welcome to Kansas a

Hi Bill, welcome to Kansas a nice state with plenty of good jobs and common sense.

My wife and I moved there, for my last railroad job 15 years ago, lived there and built a home, with a basement and lived there for 9 years before moving back to Minnesota for retirement/family reasons. We lived in Wichita and enjoyed it greatly, it being the largest town in Kansas but we did spend a lot of weekends either in or close to the basement for tornadoes.

BTW, don't ever believe the Weather Channel for accurate reporting since all they do is over, sensationalize their reporting to make it news not safety. Case in point: One friday night they were reporting that several tornadoes were heading NW(we lived on the SW so always would be the first to "enjoy them") preparing to completely, destroy the city. While they continued to instill fear and screamed into their microphones, stupidly, standing outside in the rain and instilling fear into their viewers the warning sirens in town hadn't even been sounded and when they were were, we turned to our local stations where the weather man calmly said: "Well, folks you hear the sirens and we predict it could get a bit rough so now is probably the time to head for your shelter".  Nobody usually, gets too excited and just rolls with life. But, seriously do not screw around when it comes to an adequate storm shelter, spend the bucks and protect you and your loved ones.

Note: do plan on getting a new roof every three years because of hail damage... as that's the home owner's insurance estimate (we once had soft ball, sized hail go through our brand new roof one year after construction) ... but maybe that's average for most states?

Just some suggestions for safe living in Kansas.

Barry, living in Minnesota where we also have tornadoes ... and other rough stuff.

@Marc.  Oh Canada!  Take of

@Marc.  Oh Canada!  Take of to the great white north.  Yeah, I think Canada would be too darn cold for me after living in central NY (Syracuse) for about 14 years.

Oh yeah, Tonawanda might as well be Buffalo, who competed for the yearly snow fall records with Syracuse.  I'm so glad to be out of that kind of weather.  I used to drive over to Buffalo from Rochester or Syracuse to do envinronmental work, including Tonawanda.  One trip was back around 05 or 07 after a big ice storm cut power for many residents for up to 2 weeks!  No thank you!

Personally...

...I much rather deal with the Snow, than Hurricanes, Floods, or Tornado's.  But that's just me!

Now there are other reasons not to like being in the State, but we won't talk about them!!!!
