I have a fairly large area that I want to put a red/brown dirt texture on before starting ground foam for vegetation. I've read the recent zip texture article and may try that. I've tried sanded tile grout and it seems tough to get it to look decent but also be completely bonded.

Since this is mostly a first layer under other ground foam and will only show in some areas I was thinking about using earth colored thinned latex with the paint texture sand mixed in. I think the paint texture sand is just silica sand in different gradations depending on how course you want the texture.

Has anyone tried this? Seems like it might be a quick and easy way to get a dirt texture on a large area.

I believe John Allen used

I believe John Allen used texture paint on top of brown paper for some of his scenery.

Ralph Lauren River Rock Paint

I have tried two of the Ralph Lauren textured paints, Suede and River Rock. For my O scale layout  I am using the River Rock, color Adirondack Bark to simulate Virginia clay.

Latex Paint

Have you watched the youtube series by "GreatestHobby" ?  It explains use of latex paint over a large area. I found it informative.

I'm using Krylon textured spray paint for several building roofs.  I did a test sample and was quite pleased, as I originally intended to glue fine ballast or similar to create texture. Became concerned that the weight of the ballast would require some sort of support underneath and remember that I had bought gray textured paint for another home project. Light bulb went off and I decided to try it. This week I plan to paint several roof pieces using the product and will likely add some washes to get some roofs darker than others.

G'day Phil, all

have a look at https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/corrimal-colliery-and-its-incline-a-different-slant-on-rails-12206968?highlight=%22golden+sandstone%22&pid=1331265789

This used an Aussie sandstone-textured paint. If you are after  something less grainy - check out the terracotta pints used by folk-artists to decorate their terracotta pots
