Smallest.bmp Would like some feedback on a 4'x10' island type layout I come in possession of a lot of Kato unitrack so I will utilize that. I would have liked to built around the walls layout but could not. My 9 year old son will be helping so using kato unitrack will be good.. but will later be weathered and ballasting. We will have some small operating sessions with basic train movements (just introduction for him) anyway here goes..

It 4'x10' with divider between sides Mountain scenery on one side and city scenery where yard is. In the pic you will not see the divider or mountain scenery.  well anyway here goes nothing...

The pics

Don't worry, I think you can edit the post and remove the extra pics. If not one of the editors will fix it.

As for the layout ; it seems like a nice size for you and yor son to have a good time with. Unitrack is great for planning purposes as you can assemble it in different configurations and decide what you like and need before nailing it all down.  I'd probably simplify the yard a bit, maybe eliminate the turnouts on the lower right side of the yard tracks 1-4 and make those single ended tracks, then connect the right end of the a/d track back to the main to make it double ended.  I like the layout of the industries and the coal mine, should look good when it has scenery.....DaveB

Sometimes less is more

1. Operationally and more realistic, remove the double crossover and replace it with a pair of switches on the ends of the straights.

2. Remove the connecting track to the mine branch on the top side of the plan, make the branch climb.

3. Consider making the yard a stub ended yard...

Suggestions:

  1. Agree with making the mine branch single-ended, and inclined.
  2. Set the yard a little lower than the main, for visual interest.
  3. The crossover (double or two singles) would make more sense on the upper side of the oval, so that trains on the inner main will have easy access to the yard connections.
  4. In general, two single crossovers at either end of the tangent track make more sense than a scissors, because it gives you a siding or runaround for switching.
