Speculating that I may need additional power due to the size of my projected layout, I am wondering if I can supply rail power beyond 50 feet using an older Troller Autopulse transformer (pictured) to help supplement the Digitrak Zypher I am using for this dcc layout. Running up to 10 engines over the various parts of the layout, can I supplement with this power pack or do I need to go to a DB 210 booster?

I have two of these items and was using one on my old layout to provide power for lighted buildings and Tortoise switch machines.

Upgrade

you're much better off upgrading. While it is technically possible to run DC using one of the jump ports on the Zephyer, it will eventually damage. You could also make part of your layout a dual-use section, but by the time you do the extra wiring it more work than if you just upgraded your Digitrax system.

Beware of mixing DC and DCC

Hi David

The generally accepted wisdom is DON'T mix DC and DCC - any cross feeds would probably wreck your DCC system.

The jump ports on the Zephyr do NOT supply DC to the track.  They simply allow a DC controller to control a DCC loco through the Zephyr.  There is no increase in the output capacity of the Zephyr.

If you need higher output than the 3 amps of the Zephyr, the way to go is with a booster.

P.S. - make sure your wiring can handle the current output from the booster.

Best wishes.

Thanks

Good advice - looks like a DC210 is in order. . .

Did you mean DB210 Single 3/5/8 Amp AutoReversing DCC Booster? A good choice If you need more than 3 Amps and or planning to go all Digitrax, but there are less expensive boosters out there like the Tam Valley Depot boosters which go for $55. You can get two for less than the cost of one DB210.
