I have been fascinated with this fellows work on a pier terminal building. And all the while as I read thru his numerous postings and great photos, I assumed he was  building it to add into a bigger layout. But today I just discovered he was actually building a stand alone switching layout.

I have finally built the fabled loop, now making it possible to run trains from one side of the pier too the opposite side of the pier.
So much more fun! Way better than ahead 2 feet back up 2 feet.
Now I can use all of my switches, and move cars around.
Here are the first engines to try out the new tracks.
Even the Magoun pier band showed up with their instruments & even their own bandstand, to help celebrate this milestone.

All of that new real estate

Quote:

All of that new real estate looks tempting, but I'm not planning on filling any of it up.
I just wanted to be able to run trains on the Doubleheaders layout tour on April 2nd. This new loop is just clamped to the pier on one side, and the other side is being held up by my camera tripod right now.
So I've got to figure out how I'm going to get this thing so I can remove it attach it easily.
I built a 1"x4" support framework below the plywood you see in the photo.
I was thinking of cutting out the center of the plywood to make it lighter.
That way I might be able to use carriage bolts to attach this to the other larger piece.
And not have to put any additional legs under it, so I could still move it around when needed.
It will be nice to hear what others think about this.
Thanks for having a look!

Greg

As much fun as it would be to

As much fun as it would be to fill up this new loop, with even more structures.
I just can't see this happening for a couple of reasons, (1) I built Magoun pier with the idea of it being a portable section that could be displayed at shows. I can easily fit it in the back seats of my truck, by turning it sideways.
If it had structures all over it, I could not transport it all in one truck.
(2) This loop as small as it is, now takes up what little space I have left in my workshop area. The day of the layout tour, I'm planning on moving this whole display into our laundry room, where people can at least move around it there for viewing. It would not be possible to display this to the public in my workshop space.
So as you can see, I'm between a rock and a small space to work in.

Magoun Pier

Thanks for sharing the link to this great build by Mr. Greg Shinnie.

I understand your fascination Brian and it is a fine journey to read and see the building of this wonderful layout on Railroad line forum. Very inspiring !

Happy model railroading & greetings,

I had to google it to see the front.

It’s a nice model of a water front scene.

Model or Real Life

I just ran across this fabulous collection of photos of this scene. You could almost be excused for thinking you were looking at a real life scene,..

This  mini waterfront layout needs to be brought back to life. Regrettably the forum on which it was posted has not come back to life with all of the fantastic work that was displayed there.

Fortunately some of the marvelous images have been saved on this forum,..

Brian,

The forum has been up and running for a while now. A lot of the old threads are still there but hard to find. Greg still post his projects there. Just thought I'd let you know.

Wow. If I were ever tempted to build a dock scene, I think I'd find that so intimidating that I'd never start!

Brian,

Thanks so much for sharing the link here. Not sure if because of my time in the Coast Guard or growing up in Seattle but harbor scenes have always fascinated me. And until recently I  didn't even know of the name Greg Shinnie. Which is sad because I now feel that he truly is one of the great model and scene builders of our time. I believe that he builds a whole lot of dioramas but doesn't have a working functioning train layout. I also heard that he has built most of the Rail Scale Miniature craftsman kits. Here is a different example (far from sea) of his talent at work on the latest available RSM kit.

I have not checked recently, but about a month ago that very long subject thread of his had NOT returned.

There were also some other fantastic subject threads that I don't think have returned,....particularly if that person has passed away or is no longer posting on forums. Such a shame.

Brian,

Ensign and Greg are the same people. he could get back on the RRL forum so he used his real first name of Greg. He still posts on RRL fourm.
