I had all those dire warnings about continuing to run 7 on my computer rather than upgrading to 10.

Then I get this in the mail today,..

Quote:

Microsoft fixes another 113 bugs this month after patching a whopping 115 last month.

This month's updates are a bulky release. The OS maker has made available patches today for 113 vulnerabilities across 11 products, including three zero-day bugs that were being actively exploited in the wild.

As always, details remain scant for the time being. Details about zero-day attacks are usually kept under wraps for days or weeks, to give users time to patch and prevent attackers from developing proof-of-concept code.

7 isn't even getting any of those fixes.

Win7 was just as bad. And sometimes it needs to be remembered that it's not just the OS getting fixed, it's all the software that comes with it as well - such as Internet Explorer and Edge (which is now based on Chromium, like Google Chrome).

How long has 10 been out?

Windows 10 has been out since July 29, 2015.

Five years in the technology field is a lifetime.

Windows 10 is far more stable than Windows 7. Plus, Windows 7 has not been getting update for a year or so now (almost two years).

I would rather have the company issue free upgrades and keep the programs current than other companies that don't issue improvements and just hope that because they have such a small user base that no one will bother with them.

It does not cost anything to update, mine was done automatically, I just got a message saying Microsoft has updated your system and you need to restart windows to complete the upgrade. Took about a minute out of my life, well worth it I think.

Security fixes vs. attack surface

The attack surface of windows is enormous.  Stands to reason there are a lot of issues that need fixing.  As to why they keep coming up, I'm sure some of it is churn (fixing bug A introduces bug B, etc).  But a good deal of it is attackers keep getting more sophisticated.  Things that were perfectly safe (so far as was known) 10 years ago are now known to be problematic.

All software has bugs and vulnerabilities.  When you should worry is if you see something with a large attack surface like an OS that doesn't get constant security updates.  Like for example win xp or win 7.

Normal

“Rail and sail”

‘’You are trying to assess software as you would a non-technical object such as a new lawnmower”

You have to understand operating systems and associated software are pretty complex and require patches and upgrades throughout their supported life.

‘Many of these patches and upgrades are not related to problems.  Many are improvements, allow compatibility with new technology, etc.

Another reason a continued cycle of upgrades and patches are the norm is the “bad guys” are constantly working to find ways to exploit the software.  So imagine if thousands of people were constantly working towards ways of bypassing or breaking your front door lock.

You would constantly have to upgrade or change your lock.  “This would not mean your earlier locks were necessarily a defective or a bad product”

So while the number of patches and updates looks excessive, it does not necessarily mean the software or system is “broken” or defective.

No Thank you for any Microsoft

IT friend installed,

Linux

Firefox

And I try to only use Duck Duck Go for search engine.

Just another reason I have e-mail and snail mail for communications to the Big Blue Marble.

No thanks for social media in my home.

Less stress with less mess!

Linux and firefox

Both linux and firefox get and need plenty of security updates.  Since the vast majority of cloud services run on some linux variant, linux does have plenty of bad guys (and security researchers) looking for problems.

Please read the posts on the site you referenced.

I find it hard to believe you came from the zdnet site and have no idea how long Windows 10 has been out.  Spend an hour or two there. It will be the fastest way to get the answers you are looking for.

Not to be unkind, but do you ask questions about the merits of Athearn Blue Box versus Genesis locomotives there?

While there are undoubtedly a lot of people who could definitively answer your questions about the merits of Windows 10 versus 7, this really isn't the place.

Now if the subject of this

Now if the subject of this thread was if JRMI ran better on Windows 10 than V7 I could understand it being posted on this forum.

Brian, you got your answer and this thread has little to do with trains, so it's now locked.
