Friend of mine models armor and had some really realistic looking rust on his armor models. I asked what technique he used and he said real rust...

This is the technique and method to make the rust. Also, I used an extra cup of vinegar and with a wet brush make a wash as well.

Need to do some touch up on the "lip" of the gon but wanted to at least include a couple pics.

Sealing the rust

Excellent tutorial, thank you!  If using the real rust, how do you seal it to avoid rubbing off the rust through handling?

...

I used some testors dullcoat to seal the car. My main goal originally had been on how to weather the inside of open top hoppers and gondolas as those areas of the cars typically are not painted or even if they were the paint would be rubbed off after the first load or two. Like I had mentioned if you use a little cup of vinegar you can make a slightly heavier wash to coat the insides. For the exterior of the car dry brushing works great for an overall rusting.
