Last weekend it was cold outside, -36c, so I decided to make a few wrapped bundles of lumber to scatter here and there on the layout. I used information from another modeler posted on his blog which required cutting pine to scale bundle size, printing some bundle wrapping and then cutting the paper to size to wrap around the wood. I only planned on doing a dozen bundles but it was so easy I made a lot more.

Here are the first set of bundles getting wrapped. These are 3 foot high bundles in 8, 10, 12, and 16 ft lengths. I cut all the boards using a table saw and miter saw with some jigs to hold them secure. I also did 2.5 foot tall bundles.

In the end I made two removable loads and placed the rest around a spur that had no specific industry. Now it is a lumber yard.

I like that wall mounted

I like that wall mounted building and stacks of lumber being loaded onto mainline cars. Hope you don't mind my borrowing a few of your ideas that I was also considering....

The building is held by magnet

You are welcome to use anything for your inspiration.

The building is held to the wall with magnets. That way it won’t fall over and is easily removed should I decide to add details.

Magnets!

I have a few buildings that will go against the backdrop. I was just going to have them setting there, but adding magnets is a genius idea.

I'll have to do that!

Good idea with the magnets

That is a good idea Tim, I'll be borrowing that.  I was contemplating using magnets to hold a resin locomotive shell on the frame as well.

If it stays cold (which it will until May), you'll have more lumber than you know what to do with.

What type...

Tim,

What type of magnets did you use? Strips? Round? Also, where did you purchase them? This is a great idea and the timing for me is ideal!

Thanks!

Neal

Roll of Magnet Strip

Picked up at dollar store in craft section. The roll is inexpensive. I glued a piece to the wall and a piece to the back of the building. Strong enough to hold the building fast to the wall but not so strong you can’t move the building if need be.
