Comments/suggestions wanted. Taking advantage of some "free" time over the holidays, I have roughed in the area that I planned for an Intermodal Yard on my layout. image0.jpeg I have several trailer units that I have custom built with various Canadian transport companies. I take a photo of the prototype, then crop out everything except the trailer side. Reduce the image to fit on the N Scale truck side and print the decal on decal paper. This photo shows my early experiments to the finished, ITS Ltd's "Support Our Troops" trailer.

This is just a rough in for trial purposes. I will use a full sheet of foam when ready to start installing.

The entrance/egress track comes off the mainline at a level section on the 2% grade. It then splits into a wye and two turnouts, providing four yard tracks. Each track will be able to spot five to seven flat or well cars. A concrete pad will be laid over the entire yard area, container area and adjoining the tracks. The gravel access road will cross over the mainline below the crossover turnouts on the far right and run between the wye and the turnouts in the yard to the Intermodal Office. The storage area for trailers will be gravel.

Container operations will be in the rear section of the Intermodal Yard with container storage behind. Stacks will be limited to three high so as not to block the scenery behind the yard. Trailer operations will be in the front area to better display the custom built trailers.

image1.jpeg I have a Walthers Cornerstone Mi-Jack to build for the Intermodal Yard. My preliminary research of available photos shows most Canadian Intermodal yard Translift cranes are painted in yellow -any recommendations?

I will likely "play" around with the design for a bit until I am ready to commit and permanently install the yard.  In the mean time I will be looking for comments/suggestions and when construction begins, post a Work-In-Progress Blog.
