We all  love our little people, and no layout can have to many too many of them.  Recently I discovered two companies in Great Britain, selling 3-D figures in several popular scales.  I ordered just a few from each company to see if I would like them.  Here are before and after photos.  Let me know what you think'.  I must add, I received them from England, in just a few days after ordering them...

Very Nice!

Those look terrific, and you did an excellent job painting and weathering them.  I especially like the look of the older man's beard.  What scale are they?

Wish there were a US Modelu

The whole concept and execution of Modelu is terrific. I have a few drivers and firemen that were made specially for Hattons to go with their P Class 0-6-0 Tank. If you check out the layout blog for Little Muddle on the RMWEB forum you can see a lot of them used to great effect. The owner of Little Muddle now appears in a lot of pictures of his layout.

See more at  https://www.modelu3d.co.uk/

The most interesting Modelu figures are the ones created for the Pendon Museum to go on their 1930's Vale scene. Particularly the groups of women shopping and in conversation.

There is something the owner of Modelu has developed in the software he uses to turn the scans into 3-D printable objects that is better than any other attempt at recreating lifelike human forms I have seen. It smooths and drapes the models clothing in a way that the print is believable.

I have not seen anyone doing this type of scanning sculpture for railroad modeling in the US.

It's a good thing they can't 3 D print larger than life size in granite or castings for brass otherwise there would be a line of politicians lined up at the Modelu door. Come to think of it this could put classical sculptors out of business and close down art schools.  Automation in the extreme.

yeah

I've been drooling over these for a year or so. Like others have said I'd love to see some modern U.S. workers as there is no way I can slip in any of the workers that they now have.

Printle

There is a company on 'Shapeways' called Printle.  They are scanning real people too, and making 3-D prints.  The facial details are defined very well.  That is the only flaw with ModelU.  In fact I'm re-doing the faces on a few of these above as I am not happy with them.  I should have had the camera check them first. And I didn't. So, a re-do is in order'...

Thank you for your comments'..

The DownUnder equivalent

Hi Ken, Rick all

If your workers wear overalls (coveralls?) perhaps the range from Andian Models in Australia may be more to your liking?? Also produced by 3D scans of live humans and then 3D printed. Here's a photo of their stand at a  recent exhibition

I have several of the scattered around "Corrimal" - sorry none in any photos I can lay my "electronic hands" on at present.

Although that look pricey, remember that the website price is in Aussie $'s. Take about 30% off for US equivalence.

Me and a Terrier

Here is a ModelU scan of me, in 2mm.ft scale on my layout, with a scan of a dog produced by Hardys Hobbies.

Painting the dog was tricky.

The station building and concrete fencing was also 3D printed, but I created the computer models for them the hard way.

Modelu

Their main Unique Selling Point is that you can visit their stand at a number of exhibitions they attend every year and ACTUALLY GET YOURSELF SCANNED AND REPRODUCED IN YOUR CHOSEN SCALE! They have a selection of outfits to wear on hand. I chose a US-style driver's("engineer's") hat and now have a 1/87 version of myself which I plan to drop into my Athearn Genesis Big Boy...the closest I am ever likely to e perience the footplate of one of these beauties. Oh, and the proprietor (Alan Butler) is a lovely bloke as well!

Alan Butler/ModelU

Does Alan ever come to the states or strictly in England?  I've corresponded with him on emails, and indeed he sounds like a nice bloke'..
