Good stuff Kevinn!

Here is a shot of the prototype and a few of my attempt. An old Front Range GP-7 with Frisco specific details added to it.  The Odd sprak arrestors are made from sheet styrene.    Enjoy, Steve

New signs going up on the RR

Some crossing and no trespassing signs are going up all over, in response to frayed war nerves about the recent German spy team caught with plans to blow up key infrastructure points in the US!

Recent Z scale caboose project

My friend John bought a Z scale C&O freight set for his wife, who wanted a small layout in her office. The only problem was that the set had a Santa Fe caboose. I was able to remedy that for her by making up a custom set of decals and repainting the caboose.

I show it along side an HO scale caboose for comparison.

The lighting was a little weird for this photo- the stripe on the yellow caboose is actually more of a cherry red.

Frisco GP7 #632

Yes. The prototype's arrestor design was created by the shop crews at the Frisco's Fort Smith Roundhouse. It turned out those would flow the exhaust more freely than the flared-type arrestor, yet still perform the intended function.

Typically, the Fort Smith spark arrestor was only applied to those GP7's assigned to the Fort Smith Roundhouse as their maintenance point.

That design went through about 3 phases, but I doubt anyone here is going to be splitting the hair's of a Frisco Fort Smith spark arrestor fine enough to need the info.

Cab Hop past the Section 18 Mine area to go retrieve some empties at Wilpen.  The coarse screener for the drag line is at the right.

Milt,

Nice photo!  Question:  Have you posted a photo before of the crane/dragline?  I'm interested in seeing more of it.

Thanks,

Spark Arrestors

Andre and Steve,

I thought the spark arrestors were very interesting....the Midland Valley/KO&G used a very similar or same type of design on several of their Geeps for a while.

There are several photos of them on Mike Condren's web site...and most of those shots are actually at Ft. Smith.  Even though the loco's in the photo's roamed system wide....and the KOG/MV shops were at Muskogee.

Do you have dimensions of the various phases you mentioned?  I guess there is more interest than you may have thought???

Fun post, and the model looks great.  Always exciting to see a Front Range Geep....and even better for a mid-western road.

Enjoy,

Gary H.

Nice photo Tom, reminds me of one of my old train watching spots in the parking lot next to a couple sidings by the Lowell train station.

Bitter Creek Old Timer

Since I model the late 1890s in Nevada, I thought I'd add a Bitter Creek model of a 25' Central Pacific RR boxcar to  my Eureka and South Pass RR layout. It's a neat little car. It sits on Bitter Creek trucks (T-32) appropriate to the model. Really enjoyed the project (except for those pesky little hand grabs and NBWs). I think I lose more than I capture. Sigh.  Alex

Inspiring Contributions

Nice to see all the fine work here, folks.

I had to go all the way to Italy to retrieve an A-B set of ex D&RGW to patch-out Penn-Central Athearn Genesis f7s!

_F7_754a.jpg  The B unit is already in the shop for a replacement sound decoder, LEDs and couplers. I presumed these to have a Tsunami decoder but to my surprise (dismay) they had MRC decoders in them.

I remember seeing these engines running around the Cleveland, Ohio, area back in the mid-late 1970s. A welcome relief from the basic black of the time.

Thank You, Ed

There are a few pics of 632 online that show the spark arrestors fairly well. Ugly but interesting I thought.

SLSF GP7 spark arrestors

Yes Steve, I've been looking a little.  Even on the Mike Condren site there are several different types showing up

on their Geep 7's.  As you say, some ugly, but all very interesting.

Just a coincidence (freelance theme), or do you have an affinity for the prototype?

The prototype MV ran over here in my region and there are still many traces of it. For many years I've had an interest in the MV, and my old friend David in Fort Smith really has an affection for it.
