When I designed my layout 30 months ago, it was designed with operation in mind, catering for up to 6 operators and a dispatcher. After my first official operating session, I realized there was a serious design flaw in one area, the harbor. I wanted to have the water at the back of the layout, against the wall, so that I could animate a ship gently rocking with the waves in the harbor, by using a slow rotating motor, geared down even further to create a gentle up and down motion you experience when a ship is docked in the harbor. The problem with this thinking was that the the track on the docks were out of reach of the operator, as it was two and a half feet away from the front of the layout and set at 55 inches high. To rectify this problem, I stripped the whole area of all scenery and tracks, and rebuilt it, with the quay right at the front, giving the operator more and easier access to uncouple the trains. I also had to move the mainline to the rear of this area. Moving the mainline eliminated a dangerous crossing between two main lines, so I am quite pleased with the result. An operating session is yet to follow on the new section, but here are some photos of the newly built section.
