I recently purchased a collection with this turntable in it.  It is missing 1/2 a railing for one of the sides and i'm hoping to identify it so I can order a replacement part.  But there is no identifying text on it, and google searches find nothing that matches.  I would think it's a Heljan Turntable, but none of the pictures look like it.  I need help, thanks!

I believe...

that you are correct.  It looks like the old Con Cor / Heljan turntable.  A Google search did yield images of this turntable, including a box image:712154_1.jpg

I was afraid of

I was afraid of that.

SIGH

Would anyone happen to have this turntable and didn't use the handrails and could spare one?  It looks like there were 4 of them.

Thanks.

Hi Ken

If your heart isn't set on replacing the original kit parts with originals, those parts can be replaced and look better in the process.

* Handrails: You could use Athearn's old "Blue Box" long handrail stanchions and brass wire about .019" in dia. Drill the ends of the ties in even placements to receive the desired number of stanchions, cut the wire to fit, and crimp to the Athearn stanchions.

* Overhead frame: Evergreen styrene square tubing of appropriate size, and a miter box w/razor saw. Liquid cement to glue the parts together.

Whatever you decide, best of luck!

As information from a retired

As information from a retired railroader, many turntables didn't have handrails.

Crew members just learned how to balance themselves while walking by a locomotive on a turntable and didn't need them or they positioned themselves on the end when using it.

You would be just fine not having handrails on a turntable.

TT Hand rails...

As a retired railroader my experiences were exactly opposite: Never remember being on one that didn't have hand rails.

Here's a picture of one of the turntables I've been on/over many times during my railroading. This picture is from an even earlier time than my railroading years (pic from the early1960s):

So, obviously one's mileage will vary.

However, not my TT on the workbench. It's Ken's and thus it's his decision as to what to do.

All fer now!

. . .

Why not scratch build ?  Rather simple task using Evergreen polystyrene available from most hobby shops.

Tichy 8280?

The Tichy 3 rail fence might make a "close-enough" replacement:
