As my  Instagram and  YouTube activity goes up I've been ignoring my blogging a bit. What I am not ignoring however is my layout room. Construction continues even as the weather gets nicer and the great outdoors calls to me. I'm going a bit slow, a bit deliberately, but I am happy with the progress I've made thus far.

I find there is a certain degree of magic in this point of the model railroad construction process. It is the beginning of a long journey. It is no longer just an idea in my mind. It is a sketch, a skeleton about to come to life.

strong design

45 degree braces provide optimal strength for shelves, and the braces are economical use of material.

Bracing

Thanks for the comments guys!  The benchwork stands 33" off the wall at that point and I didn't want to mess around! The plan is to use wall brackets everywhere I can on the layout (except for that one corner where exposed concrete walls exist.) I am using commercial brackets everywhere else but in this area they just don't make them large enough and heavy-duty enough for my liking. Hopefully these will hold up well overtime.  I can always go back and make adjustments later if need be.

Benchwork

I love seeing benchwork that is beautifully constructed. Or, quoting Robert Duvall......"I love the smell of benchwork in the morning!"

Mine, not so much. Maybe next time.

Neat workmanship.  That no

Neat workmanship.  That no doubt reflects what the rest of the layout will look like.

That is not the cheapest lumber you used there.  But, it sure feels good to work with that grade, doesn't it.

Good Lumber

Thanks Dean, Good lumber will (hopefully) shore up some terrible construction skills!
