Hi everyone,

I am considering more and more the possibility of a medium sized layout in the future that functions as follows.

A stub ended yard on one end of the layout followed by a Y junction with a branch line splitting off of the main line. Each would be point to point operationally with two small staging yards or a common staging yard on the opposite end. The main could be continuous run though.

I would like to model both lines with a fair amount of track run but I am uncertain if such a design has ever been well executed operationally or where a branch and main are given equal importance.

Examples of built or planned layouts would help.

Thanks ahead of time.

T

Something like a T shape with the stub yard on a peninsula would probably work well.

Wye at the base of the peninsula allowing the main to go one way around the room, the branch the other.

Great Western Trackplan

My model of the Colorado Great Western railway has all the elements you mention and more.  The layout features the GWR shortiine with a Y in the middle leading to upper and lower levels. Also featured is an around the room Colorado and Southern mainline that uses a staging yard for off layout locations. The main line connects to the GWR in two places - Loveland is the main connection and Windsor is a secondary connection. The are a total of five Ys on the layout to properly model the operations.

Below is a small track plan. My website has more plans and lots of details.

Thanks, any more?

Thanks for the posts. They both have good food for thought. Any additional examples?
