NP 10000 series boxcar conversion to tool car

Rapido's Northern Pacific Ry 10000-series double-sheathed 40-foot boxcar has been a very popular HO model.  I've been doing some detailing, decal and weathering to modify these cars as they were seen in service on the home road in 1969. During the mid to late 1950s a large number of these cars were retired from revenue service, with some sold, some scrapped, a few lightly updated and soldiering on in revenue service, and many relegated to company service.  The cars converted to maintenance of way use were, for the most part, only rudely repainted and stenciled, and the ghost of their former lettering was prominent.

The tool car below is modeled after one in MW service in the Rocky Mountain Division of the NP in the late 1960s through early 1970s. This might have been the most complicated weathering job I've attempted to date--I pulled almost every trick in my book at some point to get to the final outcome.  pencil-1.jpg

Bill: That Swayne Shay #6

Bill: That Swayne Shay #6 really catches my eye. A beautifully proportioned locomotive, and painted and detailed to perfection.

WPF

Chris B., I love the looks of that scene.  I've really been enjoying the pics you've been sharing lately.  More please!

Chris F., beautiful work on those MOW boxcars.  Great examples of why MOW is some of my favorite equipment.

Steve, wonderful weathering as always.  I especially like that Frisco SD45.

I've been away from WPF for quite a while, but thought I'd finally share some recent progress.

Back in March I started a project to add a box culvert under Locust St. in Atlantic, Iowa, as I initially missed its existence when I modeled this area, so it was time to correct that.  I know it sounds like a boring task with little payoff, but this is part of a key scene on the layout, and I felt that the culvert and surrounding details added interest.  After being sidetracked for several weeks, I finally completed this update yesterday.

A prototype pic looking west:

Next, a makeshift barricade I just added west of the culvert, the prototype apparently being from a long-vacated alley:

And a view looking east through town (prototype pic courtesy of Dan Munson):

Redid the pulp yard ground cover

I added a new mixture to the pulp yard ground/driveways.  A 3-1 mix of Arizona Rock and Minerals of Earth # 1090 to Desert soil #11003.

Beautiful photos

I don’t want to slight anyone as this week’s photos are great. But, Modeltruckstuff-Steve, I have always admired and applaud your work and this is no exception, however the pond/slough/pond you have along the tracks to me is out of this world. All the stuff in the water, wonderful.

@TomO

Thank you I really appreciate it.   I wish everyone could see the water in person it shows better that way. It is fairly deep and shaded with weeds , stumps , rocks in there. I’m glad you enjoy the scene for occasional pictures.

I also appreciate the nice comments on my models, but more importantly am enjoying everyone else’s photos this week. I do agree that company service cars are a lot of fun to model. Thanks to all who share here.

The repair/tire shop has landed.

Finally.

Little building....but still took its time to land on the layout!
