I've recently started using Chrome, and sometimes, when posting in here, I have trouble getting the cursor to appear.  I usually have to close the site, and then come back on.

I even had trouble getting the cursor before I could type this.

Is it a Chrome thing?  I've never experienced this with other bowsers, or, using Chrome, on other sites, only here in MRH.

Thanks,

Mike.

I don't think it is a Chrome thing

I have used Chrome for years and never seen that kind of behavior. I dhave no idea what would cause that but it seems odd if it only occurs with Chrome.

Sweep the broom...(Chrome 73 VS MRH Autosave auto-recall pop-up)

Dear Mike,

It's not you, I've seen and confirmed this symtom on both Win7 and 10, running Chrome 73.
Follow along for an explanation:

- The MRH forum has a feature which "autosaves" your posts as you type them.

- Most of the time, you don't notice this, and you don't need the feature.

- However, if you are one of the people who seem to be affected by the "force logged-out just as they hit 'Post' on a message", using the "restore autosaved" function can save your life.
(For more on how this feature works, see here
https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/mrh-website-logouts-and-best-practices-12212328
https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/an-auto-saved-version-would-you-like-to-compare-content-huh-12205258 )

Now, why is your cursor not-appearing sometimes?
(The "arrow" cursor moves around the screen,
but the flashing-bar "cursor" which allows you to type doesn't appear,
and attempting to mouse-drag to select any text doesn't work as-expected...)

- When you click on a thread that you may have posted-to
(or written a "draft" posting but not actually committed to posting the comment)

_sometimes_ a pop-up box will appear saying something like

"...you have a saved version of a post from this thread. Would you like to restore the saved content?"
(See the above links for screenshot examples)

- Normally, you would just click "Cancel" to this, and continue on your way...

HOWEVER, in some recent versions of Chrome, that pop-up does not always "pop to the front" so you can see it!

This leaves the computer in the weird state that:
- it has "popped a pop-up" which it expects you, the human, to click
- it has "pulled focus" onto the pop-up (IE that's where your cursor is, waiting you to do something)
- BUT, because you, the human, can't see the pop-up,
you don't/can't "click the (invisible) pop-up away",
and also cannot see the (equally invisible) cursor...

NB: Unlike some similar situations in the Windows world, ALT + TAB won't "cycle thru" to allow you to force the "missing/hidden pop-up" to the top/front so it's visible... :-(

SOO, how to get out of this situation?

Quickest way is to click the "Broom" icon at bottom right of the Message box,

da_broom.png

this _normally_ is used to clear your "autosave history",
but in this case, clicking the broom forces the "Do you wish to clear your Autosave History" pop-up in front of all other windows,
thus making it visible and "pulling focus",
thus you can "click it away" (click "Yes" or "No", your choice),

...and, with the main MRH page no-longer having a pop-up "steal the cursor focus",
you can continue on as-normal, to type the post/message/comment you were originally intending to post...

PS so, what causes the pop-up to sometimes "pop-up behind/invisible?"
Good question... I suspect its some form of page-load-timing/race-condition VS the Autosave-recall pop-up mechanism, but have not been able to consciously and predictably provoke the symtom to occur as confirmation... :-(

... and how do I know that the "autosave" pop-up was hidden?
...Well, when the 2nd "sweep the broom" pop-up is invoked,
it appears and the missing 1st "autosave recall pop-up spontaneously appears underneath it,
IE popping the "2nd pop-up" resets the Z-layer and drags the "invisible" pop-up box up into visibility...

PPS now that I think about it, sometimes these pop-ups appear in the middle of the screen,
(IE centred L<> R and Top<> Bottom)

and sometimes they pop-up hard-up-against the top of the screen...
(Centred L<> R, but all-the-way at the TOP)

I wonder if the X/Y "appear onscreen" pop-up co-ords might be part of the issue?
(If X/Y co-ord is somehow invalid, then subsequent Z-layer co-ord becomes invalid too,
with "invisible pop-up" results?)

Google it

Google is your friend. If I google this problem, I find: Mouse disappearing in Chrome? Please disable Hardware Acceleration: Click the Chrome Menu (⋮ Icon), then choose Settings> Advanced Settings Scroll down to the System Section Disable Hardware acceleration Restart Chrome completely (by entering chrome:restart into the Address Bar) I also find entries talking about making sure your mouse driver is up to date.

Thanks Joe, mouse is new,

Thanks Joe, mouse is new, drivers up to date.  I tried the disable  acceleration thing.  I'll see if that helps.

Same thing with Safari

Thanks Prof. The clean sweep seemed to help a mac / iOS user as well.

Switch text fields

I’ve had a similar problem occasionally, I’ve found clicking in a different field (like the subject), then back into the main edit box helps.

Not a mouse or accelleration thing

Dear Joe, Google-fu does not trump basic diagnostic observation. (Dr Google is a flawed MD). If the missing-cursor issue struck randomly on any/all page-loads, I'd be inclined to consider a global setting like graphics accelleration, (NB, it's the vertical-bar text cursor that's "missing", Not the mouse-pointer arrow cursor) But in this case, it's solely MRH, (no other forum pages or text-data-entry-fields I frequent), And solely on page-loads of threads where I know I have an autosave active/pending. (IE I "drafted" a comment, but clicked-away from the page before hitting "Send" on the post). The fault is either within the "you have autosave content" pop-up appearance code, (does not assert pop to absolute top of graphics stack/Z layer), Or a race condition between the pop-up-loading code and some other element on the MRH page, possibly a bad advert? (I've seen MRH page-requests/loads fail due to a bad/malformed advert being called, And the randomised calling of the various adverts, Assuming one of the adverts in the pool _is_ part of the fault equation , would explain the randomised/rare occurrences of the fault... IE randomised Bad Ad + thread-with-active-autosave-content = cursor mis-focus fault condition) Happy modelling, Aim to Improve, Prof Klyzlr

FYI:  It's not just Chrome,

FYI:  It's not just Chrome,  MRH has problems with my Apple iPhone too.

Try to make or reply to a comment etc.  text box will open,  but I can not type anything into the box..

Apple iPhone 6s running ios 12.2 with Safari.

Was going to comment with the iPhone,  but MRH will not let me enter text into the text box.

So on the PC with google Chrome,  and yes I have had the same issue with Chrome.  Unable to enter text or use the cursor to back up etc.

I just look at it as the price to pay to use MRH,  not my issue,  I do not run the site,  so not my problem.  But know that someone brings it up,  He is not the only one.

I turned the accelerator back

I turned the accelerator back on.  I totally miss-red Joe"s post.  It's not the mouse pointer.

I'll just use the broom thing.

Thanks,

Mike.

It also happens on the Chrome iPad app.

I have the same issue on my iPad using the Chrome app. The vertical bar cursor would disappear when entering a new post or comment. I can get around it by clicking on “Switch to plain text editor”. If I then go back to the enhanced editor, the cursor would remain. Doesn’t happen all the time, and hasn’t happened for a few days now. Maybe my Chrome app was updated to a new version.
