Gentle suggestion. A lot

Gentle suggestions based on watching many YouTube videos. Keep scenes of people talking to an absolute bare minimum. My wife fast forward you tube videos past talking people quickly, so do I. Typical viewers, especially younger viewers don't have the patience. This is just reality and makes videos much more watchable and appealing. Also cut it in half time wise. thanks.

So...

A video that's "advertised" as a look back and a chat with someone isn't supposed to have talking?

Have you never watched a Ken

Have you never watched a Ken Paterson video?  It is just full of talking people with less substance.  He needs to cut it tighter to remove the part with all the talking people.

I'll just leave this as food

I'll just leave this as food for thought.

In brief, viewers attentions spans aren't what they used to be.  It isn't that the content isn't worth watching, it's that we aren't patient and our brains have been essentially programmed to receive information at a high rate of speed and we "tune out" before the video is finished, often not long into a video.

The older generations are less affected so based on the fact that this hobby has a high percentage of older people, I can see why there might be some push back on this.

The salient point here is, if you don't acknowledge the reality that viewers attention spans are fairly short, especially in the younger generations, and time is often limited, then as a presenter of video content, you may be creating something that isn't going to be fully watched and appreciated if talking content isn't quick and too the point, and kept as brief as possible.  If the target is retired people with a less hectic life and a lot more time, crack-on.

So who is old and who is young?

You're 60 and you say don't have the patience. And yet his videos get upwards of 5K of views. So someone's watching them. And from the comments, they seem much younger.

Thank you for you comment

Jim,

25% of my Subscribers are under 25 years old. as I look at 10 years of videos I get more views from younger people when I look at electronics and computers so subject matter also plays it to the equation. So painting with a broad brush is not fair to anyone. I started doing videos do to the request of what was going on on my layout. Videos with trains just passing by will not help anyone build a layout but you will and may get more views for a longer time.

So this fall into the camp out what are you looking for. Layout tours or how to. I also would not say that age play into viewing attention span but rather subject matter will. I don't watch videos on bench work when I am working on scenery, That is the way we all are and not by age.

my 2 cents and it may be less then that but if you would like try your hand at it I am sure someone will like to see what you are doing as well.

Thanks all for the comments let's get back to modeling.

Talking

Talking with something going on is different than just talking.

I just completed making a 2 part video on casting resin cars and if you haven't made a video, its harder than it looks and its difficult to shove a whole lot of info into a short time, especially if its just one or two guys in a basement without a lot of sophisticated graphics expertise.

For better or worse, I tried to have some motion or demonstration while I was talking. It was still way too long.

On the other hand there are several hobby webcasters with thousands of subscribers that half the time, are just talking heads with little or no movement or demonstration on an 45 min-hour show.
