While it's true, I don't really have tracks to run a train on, one of the things I enjoy about this hobby is the wide variety of activities it includes.

In that spirit, while waiting for the glue to dry on some ballast on the first module of the Barre Branch, I decided to grab a car kit, and get started building the fleet. I'm going to try and keep my car builds contained within this thread, we'll see how well that goes!

Tichy 40' 50 ton Flat Car

The first kit I pulled out was a Tichy 40' 50 ton Flat Car.

This is my first Tichy kit, and so far I'm very impressed. The level of detail, and the way things fit together is very impressive; granted I've only gotten as far as shown above (the deck and fishbelly frame mostly assembled) but the quality is outstanding.

I'm not sure how folks can say kits are dead; for $8.95 direct from Tichy, to me this is a steal. I'm still not sure how I'm going to paint and or decal this model, as I have three of them I'd like to label for the Barre & Chelsea Railroad, but for now I'm just enjoying the build itself.

I thought

I thought someone here had done one, I couldn't find the thread under the search. Your boards look great, btw.

Thanks

Thank you, sir.

I know the deck's top coat is SP Lettering Gray, but I can't remember what I used for the undercoat.  I'm pretty sure it was Engine Black.

First, I painted the deck with black.   Then I streaked it slightly thinned gray.

You might want to!

Hey Scarp,

If you like the Tichy flat cars you might want to check out the steam crane and crane tender kits!  Heres the real thing!  A model with some Central Vermont decals applied and the boom car to go with it would look pretty cool!  Plenty of detail and just a little bit of patience is required when stringing the cables!  Great kits good price and all that I would recommend is that its best to substitute metal stirrups and grab irons for durability!    I also like that you can purchase the kits and get the grab irons all at the same time  http://www.tichytraingroup.com/

Greg

I thought about you mentioning something in a thread, might it have been this car?  I plan on painting it the proper box car red with D&H lettering  Tichy flat with wheel load!

The Tichy 120 ton wrecking

The Tichy 120 ton wrecking crane is a fantastic model so much so that you can Kit bash one to make the D&RGW Ditcher OX also used on the penn and about 5 other railroads I have a picture of one I kit bashed below from about 15 years ago and I still have 3 more still in the box as well as the service cars yet to be built.

Here is the Basic model of the 120 ton crane with a little Brass sheeting some Brass Bridge gerders you can make your own ditcher in about 4 days

That crane looks great

That crane looks great; I may have to look into that. Besides the flat cars, I have a couple of tankers to assemble as well, but after that........look out!

I got some more work on the first flat car completed, the stake pockets are on, the fishbelly frame is mounted, I basically stopped while running the brake lines. I'll try and pick up from there soon though.

Great-looking OX

How about posting some more details and photos on that ditcher, Dan?  Rio Grande Models offered a similar kit back in the 1970s, but to me at the time, it was totally intimidating.
