When I was making a coaling tower I posted the best photo that I had of the tower and asked for ideas.

The hardest element of the tower model was the surface.  The best photo that I have found of the tower shows that the forms for the concrete walls were 1 by 12's or something like that.  In any case, the form lines are apparent at the distance we are looking at it on the layout..  I tried all sorts of things to try to create the illusion of the form lines.

What I finally did was to download a photo of concrete with form lines from texture.com.  I then printed it and cut it out and glued it to the tower -- which took lots of time.  When the model was fresh it was all a little lighter than it is in the photos.  I model in a garage in SC so humidity is a big problem. After I attached all of the concrete texture I sprayed it with a preservative which darkened it more than I would have liked. I also could have done the rust lines better -- but just starting to weather. 515_0162.JPG

That may have taken a boat load of time but it was worth it! Absolutely stunning.

I too have sprayed photo textures with dedicated preservatives and had the darkening issue. I don't use them anymore just high quality paper, Dulcote and no sun on them. They may slowly fade but so am I so I figure I won't worry about it.

Neither

It is form Alkem.  They no longer offer it but I have seen it on ebay.  The other place to look for it as at centralvermont.io  I know one was posted for sale there in the recent past. If you want I will post there to find who has one for sale.
