Three weeks ago I launched my new product, Roomettes, at the Amherst Railroad Hobby Show.    Today we launched the website!        https://roometteslighting.com/

I am now able to take orders for Roomettes online.  To celebrate I'm offering free shipping on orders of two or more kits.  Also, there is a special offer for anyone who wants to go crazy and order all 10 kits.

If anyone has any questions about the product I'll be happy to answer them here.  I've produced a short video that you can watch on my website that explains the basics.  I'll be expanding the website over the next couple of weeks with more images, and more kit releases.

I also have a Facebook page where everyone can share photos and tips.  https://www.facebook.com/Roomettes/

Thanks to everyone who has been supportive in helping me get this project off the ground.

I've been

wanting to add an interior to my "M.T. Arms" hotel (called the Gilmor on my layout with the Miller Engineering "neon" sign) for at least 15 years.  Never really got off the ground and now you've got pretty much what I was wanting to do in a kit.  I'm sold.  Of course, I'll have to buy a second to get the free shipping...

Nice!

Noticed though that pictures of kits don't show all rooms.

For example only one room (main showroom) is shown for:

The Bookworm

$23.95

Fits Woodland Scenics 11800 – 1st National Bank or Patriot Appliance

  • 3 laser-cut rooms
  • shelves, store signs and exterior sign
  • 3 warm white LEDs with JST plugs

Hopefully

My wish list would include:

  • A small tavern/bar
  • A drug store
  • An office-type establishment (accounting firm/lawyer type of thing)
  • Small warehouse
  • Machine shop/industrial shop

It does say in the FAQ that N and O scale are coming at some point.

Shipping charges

If anyone ordering notices that a $4.50 shipping charge is being applied where it shouldn't, it's a bug in the shopping cart. That will be fixed after the weekend. In the meantime I will note it and refund it.

Involving your spouse

After spending four days at train shows, here is something I have observed: When couples walk by the Roomettes booth it's usually women who grab their partner and drag them back to take a look. Perhaps it's because the interiors have a link to dollhouse culture. Perhaps there is a primal connection to "nesting" urges, if it's not too sexist to suggest that. Regardless, I could certainly see this aspect of the hobby as a way to share creative pursuits with a partner or spouse. Discussion?

Anyone

got some examples of completed work yet?  I've got two of the kits I'm starting work on - one the hotel and the other the Banfield Street #1.  My M.T. Arms Hotel kit was already built and I had to do some reconstruction on it, so currently working on that but hope to have it ready in a week or so.

My initial thoughts are the roomettes are really easy to put together and I think will look pretty good.  The only slightly odd thing for me is that the "Arlington Hotel" has 6 rooms for the hotel but they are all different colour schemes.  I would think most hotels' rooms look pretty much the same and certainly are all the same colours throughout.  I understand this was probably done so you could use the rooms for different things, it just doesn't quite look right to me.  Regardless, four of them are similar enough that I'll have four rooms in the hotel and use the other two in other buildings.  The lobby is great for what I wanted and while I hadn't thought of a liquor store for a tenant in the building, it will actually be a nice fit.

The only other thing I have just a slight concern about is how "shiny" they are - if that will look realistic as it is or if I will tone them down a bit with Pan Pastels or something else.  Not worried about it, just some thinking about it.  I'm looking forward to seeing what else Barry comes up with for kits.  I'll likely be purchasing a couple more of the existing kits for other buildings, too.  I'll start posting in my blog with all the details of my progress.

Differences in rooms

You are probably right that most decoration in hotel rooms nowadays is identical.  (I've only ever rented one room at a time so I can't say personally)

The Arlington is an example of a boutique hotel, as opposed to what you might find in a chain franchise.  Part of the inspiration for this particular Roomette was taken from the actual Arlington Hotel in Paris, Ontario where each room has a different theme.  One of the most over-the-top examples of a modern themed-hotel near me is the Gladstone in Toronto.  https://www.gladstonehotel.com/artist-designed-hotel-rooms

The sheen on Roomettes is created by the ink - as opposed to the matte paper - and you will find it to be less noticeable once the rooms are installed and lit.  Dimming the LED reduces the reflections, and the rooms will look better with less light anyway.  But there may be some experimentation that can be done with Dullcote and Pan Pastels, as you say.

At this point it looks like I will have four more kit releases in late-April, including my first for a Walthers structure.

I'm looking forward to seeing people's results.  So far the ones that I've assembled myself are the only ones I've seen.

I'll post a link

to my blog when I get my ongoing work posted later this week.  I had the MT Arms hotel already built but there were several issues with it that needed fixing and each lead to more work, but I'm almost to the point of installing the roomettes.  Just going to make some beds to go in them.

I hear ya.

The buildings take ten to twenty times as long to build compared to assembling and installing the interiors.

You can easily make beds by carving dense styrofoam.  I've even made pillows on the beds using this method.  By the way, the bedrooms I'm making moving forward have headboards on the walls, making this even easier.

Here is the link

You'll have to scroll down the page a bit, but here is the link to my first use of the Roomettes.  Still a little work to go, but getting there.  Happy with the results so far.

Looking good, Dave.

The window coverings look really good.  I'm looking forward to trying out City Classic's venetian blinds and window signs on some future buildings of my own.

I find that I'm tending to dim the LEDs in my structures lower as time goes on.  I don't dim the room lighting, so all I want to do is accent the interiors. When displaying them at shows I have to turn them up a bit brighter to make sure that customers notice them but I find that way too bright for my taste.

This is the first chance I've had to see photos of anyone using the Roomettes.  It's satisfying to know that I'm able to contribute to other people's models.

Soon enough, Goober.

I hoping to have something available later in the year.  The flat walls will be four times the area which creates some challenges for packaging and shipping.  I just have to come up with a scheme to add a seam where two sheets can be joined before assembly.

More

Got some more done on the blog.  I'll post a final picture here once I finish it tomorrow or Saturday - just have the roof and neon sign to go.

Congrats to Barry

I saw Cody's Workshop on Model Railroader's site (video series) is using the new Roomettes in a project. They haven't gotten to using them yet but they were introduced.

Roomettes on Cody's Workshop

Yes, one kit made it back to Wisconsin from the Amherst show and it went past David Popp's desk.  He was impressed enough to ask me to send him one so he could do a multi-part series around it.  It's nice to see DPM buildings getting the spotlight as well.  There are a lot of people who have entered the hobby in the past decade who have never seen a DPM kit, much less put one together.  I like to think that Roomettes help elevate a staple of the hobby to a new level... but I'm a bit biased.

Atlas Taxi - new kit

One more game of checkers before the midnight shift starts.

Atlas Taxi & Delivery fits the Woodland Scenics/DPM "City Cab Co."  It has four rooms, four LEDs with plugs, desk, vending machine and exterior signs.

Best invention since sliced bread.

I have to date bought, built and installed "The Bookworm", Bradley FireHall and "Grant Street Building". All of the kits fit perfectly and have transformed my layout. I built "Ohio Shipping" as is but installed it in several different buildings. I have two more kits still to build but ordered 3 more today.

I am especially excited to receive the "Broadway Apartments" that you state can be adapted to many other applications. I can't wait to see 20 of these rooms (10 per kit) scattered all over my table top layout. That is a bargain kit and I wish that I would have noticed it sooner.

Hopefully they will keep cranking out more new kits and I will be sure to buy them. The City Classics "Penn Avenue Tile Front Building" would I'm sure be a great seller especially if they designed rooms to match the window dressing kit that they sell.
