I'm taking a page from  Marty McGuirk's playbook and painting the lower half of my walls the same color that my fascia will be on my layout.  I think this will look pretty clean and should frame my shelf-style layout nicely. Deciding on a color has been a tricky (yet fun) process. I think I've decided I want to go with a darker color that will compliment the scenery (which will be very similar in color to that of my old layout) but do I go with a green or a brown color? Perhaps something more neutral?

I've also been struggling with that all important consideration of layout height. My old layout was at 50 inches which was great for viewing but slightly awkward for reaching cars and switches towards the back of the layout. Lowering my new layout an inch or so would go a long way to making operations more comfortable, but I'd have to bend that much lower to view the cars at track level. Should I favor railfanning or operations with my railroad height?

Decisions, decisions.

All said, I'm glad to finally be in a position to consider these things for my layout. Now it's getting fun!

Nice backdrop

Actually looking past the color cards at your nice scenery and backdrop. I'm a guy, so my opinion on color is less-than-useful, but I'd go with the 3rd from right, or perhaps the 4th from right if you didn't want it so dark.

My current layout is at 36", which I find comfortable for operating. The next effort will likely be two decks, with the lower deck about where the current layout is, and the upper deck in the 50" range. My primary concern is ability to switch cars at the rear of an 18" shelf without going Godzilla on foreground details.

Color and backdrop

Matt, beautiful backdrop!  That's perfect!  Very, very nicely done.

For fascia/wall color, I prefer the third from the left.  I like how it fits with your scenery colors, while also being more muted.  I also like the third from the right, but feel like it's just a bit too dark and maybe draws your attention more as a result.

As for layout height, I'm 6'4" and my layout's between 48" and 51".  To me, that's been a good in-between height to allow a trackside view without much stooping, but also let you enjoy a bit of a view from the hills as a train snakes through a scene.  I know tall, close-to-eye-level layouts are in vogue, but I like having the ability to take things in from both vantage points.

Fascia Color

Beautiful backdrop, Matt

I like the second choice from the left.  I think the slight brown tone adds a warmth to the gray.  All are good!

My layout is 41"- 46" high with max 36" inch depth. Most reaches are 24" or less and I can store things and worktable under.  I like it for a one level layout.  Enjoy!

My layout is at 52”. When I

My layout is at 52”. When I stand I have access to all of the layout. But I had some fore thought and it is truly made to be viewed by sitting on a 33” tall task chair with casters. As I age, sitting will be much more comfortable than standing and I will have the view lines I prefer.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Thanks for your thoughts everyone! I think I've decided on 50" for my layout height. Any lower tends to give me too high of a viewing angle for my personal preferences.

As far as Fascia color goes, I am leaning towards a color that isn't even in the photograph. LOL!

I would have to paint my

I would have to paint my walls flat black. it's a pain to maintain but I still prefer it over any other fascia/valance color. Of the ones in the picture, I prefer fifth from left. I concur with the others on the backdrop. Well done!
