just for reference... when did RRs begin to let cars rust

I mean, what era did such slack maintenance become prevalent? My assumption would be along with numerous bankruptcies, '50s at the earliest, '70s for certain. And how do you find photos to refer to... They're usually sides or ends.

OK, I'll bite....

Here's a PC car that I did entirely using Artist's oils.

Here's a few I did awhile back.

These were all done with oils.

First and oil wash, wiped off with a "Q" tip.

Next, straight oil applied with a brush and sponge of two different colors, Burnt Sienna followed by Raw Sienna.

Finally dusted with a mix of brown and orange chalks.  I sealed them with Dull Coat after each application.

A few from my past projects

Some of these got dulcoat after the pics to flatten them a little still.

Here's a Couple

This Tangent car was weathered mostly with chalks.

While this Intermountain car was weathered with acrylics, including washes and full-strength paints applied with a makeup sponge.

It's "easy"...

Micheal - you just have to start somewhere...

Artist's oils, IMO, are an easy place to start. You really only need three colors: Raw Umber, Burnt Umber and Burnt Sienna. You'll also need some good quality Artist's mineral spirits. You can use brushes or make-up sponges.

The beauty of using oils is that if you don't like your results, your can basically just wipe them off because they dry so slow. That's also a down-side though because they do take quite awhile to dry. I always let my projects sit 24 hours before doing anything else with them.

Give it a go....
