Hey SP gurus, what type of tankers did the SP use for fuel cars often seen at Dunsmuir?

Thanks

May be wrong

But they look like the old mdc roundhouse modern tanks.

no, they're bigger and different builder

The SP's 67000-series oil cars were about 23500 gallon (if memory serves) and were built by ACF. The old MDC/Roundhouse "50-foot modern tank" was based on a 1:96 drawing of a GATC 20000 gallon prototype. They completely hosed it up. But as it turned out it looked a bit like some cars Richmond Tank Car built for the Santa Fe and private owners. When Athearn boughy MDC they redid this model with proper stub sills that correctly matched the RTC cars, fixed the other details, and made it into a very nice model. But it's still not an SP car. to further clarify

The cars in question were class O-100-7, series 67300-67345 (per the RailGoat site). Built by ACF in 1974. Off the top of my head I'm not sure of any easy way to build an accurate model of these. If the tank barrel is roughly the same diameter as the old MDC tank you might stretch a couple of them. Then use Walthers Funnel Flow kit parts for the stub sills and topside details. Scott Chatfield

Thanks dog

Now that I know what to look for I can work on "close enough".   I do have another picture with car # 67342 that was used as fuel service but I could never find out what type of car that was.  This jives with the info you posted

Maybe the ATLAS

Thanks

I'd take it and run

The Atlas model is actually the insulated version of the SP oil cars. As such the body is thicker (because of 4" of insulation) and the ends have a sharp corner instead of a broad radius. Prototypes for Atlas model were built from 1969 into the early '80s and were much more common than the uninsulated version. Frankly, since you likely need several of these cars, for both active placement in the engine facility and on-hand to switch out, I'd buy a predecorated model like the Atlas and be happy. I enjoy kitbashing one of something, two is getting to be a pain, three.... Scott Chatfield

Thanks agan BD

" I'd buy a predecorated model like the Atlas and be happy."  Kind of what I was thinking and run with the good enough concept.... at least for now.  I have to make several SP Mow water cars so I'll put the effort into that
