Ending 2018 with a few “Work-in-Progress” projects.

With a few personal changes in 2018, including two cats leaving the house with our daughter, I have been able to return to model railroading and work on my layout, The Trenton Subdivision in N Scale.

One project in particular I had been excited to start was the rebuilding of two passenger coaches and changing their colours to VIA Rail.

First is an old Rivarossi (6 room/10 roomettes) sleeper. I had picked this up at a train show. It already had a “custom” paint job. The paint was so thick that almost all detail was gone and miss identified as a diner.

With great effort I was able to remove the paint using brake fluid and an old tooth brush. There were some exceptional details waiting to be discovered under all the paint.

The second project is to convert a Bachman Superdome, also to VIA Rail colours. The manufacturers paint was easily removed with nail polish remover and a Q-tip.

I sanded off the corrugated roof to reflect VIA’s smooth tops. I have left the corrugated sides on the car, concerned about loosing too much detail in the vents and windows.

I have applied Rapido’s VIA Rail Blue by airbrush to both shells. First time using Rapido Paints, worked well, colour is excellent.

In the new year I will finish painting the roofs, ends and underneath black.

I have MicroScale VIA Rail decals on hand. The sleeper will become Ecum Secum River and the Superdome will be Qu’Appelle, reflecting the prototypes.

I look forward to adding these two models to my VIA Rail roster in 2019.

Happy New Year everyone!!!
