Has anyone ever modified a Walthers bascule bridge to accommodate two tracks?

Walthers 933-3070 HO Motorized Bascule Bridge

Perhaps leave out the 'motorized' feature?

Or examples of some other double track bascule bridges in HO scale?
I thought I had seen an example, but can't remember where??

As I look closer at this image, it doesn't appear as though they are Walthers??

Look up Ballard Bridge,WA

For a prototype double track bridge search images for Ballard Bridge 4 or 6.3 (same bridge but different name). This is a 2 track bridge over the Seattle locks. BNSF is developing plans to replace said bridge with a traditional lift bridge.

No, they're Walthers I have

No, they're Walthers

I have three of them. Found out they don't clear stack trains without mods.

I guess I was also confused by the  'operations centers' being located within the bridge structure itself, rather than out beside the bridge.

interesting they don't clear double stack container trains. I would need that mod.

And in my application i would not really need it to be operating, either electrically, nor mechanically.

Perhaps I could kitbash my double (or two singles) out of trust bridges,...or even abused, / damaged Walthers ones? Anyone have some trashed models??

@ Brian try a Kitbash...

I'm sure; none double track lift bridge exist as a model in HO or N scale

I also beleive the twins model on the picture you share, are Walthers modified model of single track lift bridge.

These kind of bridge exist since 80 years in these forms, so if you are ready to use the Walthers  model, you can easily backdated it just by changing the look of the control shed building.

About kitbashing,

These bridges on my layout are single track, but kitbashed.

They started as the simple lift bridge once offered by Pola-Model Power deck bridge.

This bridge was also offered in HO scale again by Pola-Model Power; I think it"s still show in the Walthers catalog; but anyway easy to find on EBay ( like the walthers lift bridge)

I modified them by gluing a modified Kibri truss bridge, in place of the deck bridge.

I just keep the lift details parts of the bridge, this way I obtained a lift truss bridge.

Just to say it's relativily easy kitbash.

I think if you have a Walthers lift bridge, you can do a similar modification even if the model is a single track bridge.

Walthers offer a double track truss bridge, with some studies, I think it would be "easy" to substitue the double track truss bridge in place of the single one, and glue all the lifting parts to the double track bridge by expanding them including the weight with styrene. (Walthers double track truss bridge  is part # 933-3242 and exist also in N scale)

Many detailled parts from the single track bridge could be used to make a convincing kitbash, pictures of a real bridge are always useful to make such kitbash.

Good luck

Sturdiness of them.

How sturdy are they. I been wonder about using 2 end to end like a drawbridge if I had a duck under. At a 50 to 55 inch high track level I thought that make it easier and eye candy. Or too much hassel

Not so. See

(I didn't say it was cheap.)

I'm in the same boat!

I'm modeling the BOCT/Rock Island lines in Chicago in around 1960. My layout will include both Grand Central Station and LaSalle Street stations. Both used the B&O and St. Charles Airline bridges to cross the Chicago River. Search for St. Charles Airline bridge if you want to find some good info on bascule bridges.

I'm still debating if I want to try and kitbash, just go with two single bridges, or scratch build one.

Second one arrived

Well now I have all options open. My second Walther's bridge arrived in the mail yesterday (bought used/new) so if I chose to go the double route I can, or I might just review the kitbash idea. I'll let everyone know eventually, but that project might be a bit down the road.

Shame of it would be if I decided not to go with a bascule bridge at this location at all. But that is highly NOT likely as it will fit in with my waterfront scene on one side of the entrance, and the steel mill scene on the other.

Thank you for the info, but I know they build this kind of bridge in HO and Nscale, but didn't mention them because feel they are out of context and purpose of this topic

Course CMR produce first quality Kit, I own myself a 135 foot N scale turntable wich is first rate and three still unconstructed skyscappers of their series.

Yes it's cheap or expensive, but I didn't ask to open this debate about price, this is the choice of everyone to get them or not.

Thanks to mention them ( and yes the big lift  bridge inspire me and may be I order one in a near future).

Recalculations

reference these pics

Basically I would propose to only use ONE swing arm between the two bridges (and cutting back those small decks)

That would make there only being a 1/2" spacing (width of the swing arm) between the 2 bridges, and thus a 3.75" between the 2 rack centers.
