Railfan Danny Harmon's video "Railfanning Jacksonville 09" includes a picture of a track greaser at about the 6 minutes 30 seconds .

Mr. Harmon says: "If you ever encounter a track greaser, view it from afar....if you get near it your shoes will be ruined forever...there's still a pair of Nike's in the weeds trackside... I had to drive home barefoot that day."  Track greaser are used on especially sharp curves.  For modeling, it's a blackened area a few feet in length.

When I was a kid  there was a greaser under the highway bridge at the beginning of a sharp curve leading into the Santa Cruz SP yard. We kids used to hang out there in the shade waiting for the local to arrive from Watsonville. One day we were bored so spent the time jumping on the greaser lever and spreading the pile of grease down the rails for a ways. When the train arrived it splashed thru the grease then kinda skidded on around the curve into the yard. When we walked around to the yard to see what the local had brought we found the rear end crew all  laughing hard and the engineer very pissed...DaveB
