When I added outdoor transformer storage by the Fluke Transformer structure it made it necessary to re-route the road by the tracks.  I removed some of the poly fiber landscape and cut away the foam to allow clearance; however, with the narrower area I needed some kind of retaining wall.  Carved foam to the rescue!  I've used carved foam before (including on my previous railroad - click HERE to see a MRH magazine article).

You can see the area by the tracks that I cleared where the stone wall will be installed.

I used a small knife and a ruler to carve the stones into some scrap Styrofoam.

Next I painted the entire piece dark gray and then applied a black wash to highlight the lines between the stones.

I then dry brushed on some brown paint randomly on the "stones"

I added some highlight colors using light tan.-10-06_4.jpg

Here's how the wall looks just sitting in place. Once I glue it down I'll add weeds, bushes, etc to tie it all in.-10-06_5.jpg

I'll post a picture once it's all completed.

Nice Rick!

I gotta admit that next time I'm going to finally try some foam. Carving homasote and plaster is such a pain and a dust bowl disaster on an existing layout.

Stones look great. Did you save any of the stonework to use before it was highlighted? I really think that some of that would look terrific as an older section of wall as it has so much character. I've seen that color on old stone retaining walls many times.

Thanks for Sharing Rick!

Thanks or sharing Rick. It looks super. I’m going to try this as the Chooch foam stuff just isn’t cutting the mustard and plaster doesn’t go around a curve to well!

Foam

Rick,

That's a really nice retaining wall. Well done! What kind of foam are you starting with? The blue/pink building foam, or the pebbly white stuff?

Foam

Looks like the blue (or pink would also be good) foam to me. The white pebbly stuff (EPS or Expanded polystyrene) not very good for anything except packaging.

Rick S. - thanks!

I may do some extra coloring to age the wall a bit.  I appreciate the suggestion.

Excellent Wall

Rick,

Excellent looking wall - well done!

Funny - just a few minutes ago I was watching Martin's video on how he made his harbor scene, including using Styrofoam, scored, to replicate his sea/retaining wall.  After watching his video, and seeing your photos, I'm primed to give it a try myself.

That is funny, Al!

I've had the same thing happen when it comes to techniques with multiple postings happening at the same time.  I hope that you will try carving foam as it opens up a whole new area of possibilities!
