Clifford's Coal & Oil

I'm working on the coal and oil dealer for the town of Nicholas.  Part of this is a Bar Mill's kit, Earl's Oil.  To this, I'll add a scratchbuilt scale and sorting bins, a scratchbuilt coal trestle, a coal conveyor and some vehicles and figures.  Maybe a dog.

That looks like an interesting build. I recognize the metal plate and magnets but what are the items I have circled?

 Thanks!

Thanks Bernd

Now I see the square.......my mind was trying to pair up those two devices into one thing. The Fast Tracks jig is something I have heard of but had not seen.

Appreciate it.

Both Correct

Yes, a Fast Tracks jig and a machinist's square.  I find them VERY useful for squaring up buildings, and as weights.

The jig is interesting.  I once built some switches for a friend.  They were N scale, and I model HO, so he sent me his jig, which he had never used.  It turned out it was defective, the top half was HO but the bottom half was N.  I contacted Fast Tracks and sent a picture, and Tim Warris very kindly sent a replacement jig.  I used the replacement and then sent it back to my friend with the completed switch.

Almost off the Work Bench

The new electronics are installed and the new paint applied on this ATLAS O SW9.

Before it's off the bench some more paint needs to be applied and some details.

I based the paint scheme on this prototype:

Big plastic boxes

EGRX - white lettering over gray is a handsome paint scheme that’s going to look great. Are you adding  the handmade reporting marks taped up in the window?

From the UglyK5 Big Plastic Boxes series I’m working on a low relief building for trackside. It’s kit bashed from a Pikestuff Rix prefab 30x80 warehouse which was “unfolded”, made taller with .040” styrene sheet, and veneered with JTT brick sheet. Need to add foundation, loading docks, exterior details, lighting, and interiors (leaving dock doors open)

@UglyK5

That sign would be fun while being shipped to it’s assignment on the layout.

Not only did I like the colors and how easy It was to apply them using rattle cans, but it was fun finding a SW9 that originated as a Frisco and is still operating in the 2000s.

The reporting mark will be EGRX and after setting CV 3 and 4, I might put a “NEW ENGINEER” cardboard sign in the rear cab window.

Southern Pacific B-50-15 boxcar

0-15_end.jpg

This is the latest Westerfield Models HO scale resin freight car kit. It's been an enjoyable build. The running board and those little end supports were installed yesterday. It's a one-piece body and the ladders minimize the grab iron work. Click on either image to review a larger size.

Most of the underframe details were installed the other day. I hope to wrap this up soon and move it into the paint shop. Additional details and progress images have been posted to the RCW blog.

Travel modeling

Faced with a long business trip to Europe, I packed a compact tool kit and a 1970 HO ‘box of sticks” reefer kit from Ye Olde Huff-n-Puff into my checked bag, and have been assembling it in an apartment in Paris. All tools fit into a 5”x7” plastic box and I’m using canopy glue for everything.

Dear Ray

It’s comments like yours that take the fun out of posting. You obviously have nothing done and yet the SW was painted and the s-cab electronics were installed and operational. All valid for the “Whats on you Workbench” post.

So Ray, why the comment?

Diorama no more...

This is as far as it got before it was destroyed by some Deep Pour Water!

20-14-18.jpg Unfortunately the Deep Pour Water was mixed to achieve a depth of 1cm which is less than the recommended max however it still got so ho that it started to melt the foam base... Even through a thin layer of plaster as well.

I guess I'll have to start again!

I've also been continuing the work on the dinghy and a trailer for the dinghy as well.

d%20boat.jpg o%20boat.jpg After I rebuild the diorama I think I'll go back to Envirotex Lite, it gets hot as well but in my experience it hasn't melted the foam base before.

EDIT: After some investigation I've decided to take a few extra precautions and try using the Deep Pour Water again... I think I have a better understanding of why it didn't work so hopefully I can fix it on the rebuild.

Fingers crossed!!

You need a trailer rim for your dingy trailer.  It'll be worth drawing it up, you'll use it often once it's drawn.

Very interesting to hear about the deep pour water.  I'm just about to experiment with it myself.  I noticed on the WS video that they recommend sealing the base with Flex Paste.  I wasn't going to do that because I thought it would be fine (and they might be just trying to sell you more of their products), but maybe that is the reason.  I've got plaster cloth over wood, so I'm not as concerned, but the edges of the river are foam covered in plaster cloth, so maybe I'll do the edges.

your lumber load looks good Terry. Too bad the car is so clean. HA

Boulder Creek, that’s a neat scene.  Thanks for the water tip I need some that will be on foam. I will keep that in mind. Who makes that  landcruiser model?
