Hello,

CN has put a big order into GATX for GP38-2's in taking leased operations from G&W Goderich-Exeter here in Southern Ontario as well as being power short anyway. I'd like to model one and I can't find a GP38-2 in the skeme and logo's, etc.

I did find this model on the GATX site proper:

l-GP38-2.jpg

I figure i'll start with a Conrail Geep...we're they purchased from Conrail or were they demonstrators?

So I was wondering if anyone knows who produces decals? The search comes up in Walthers but the link goes no where.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Conrail or Demo?

Neither. The blue and white is simply their colours. Those are fresh repaints, not Conrail patches.

Note also while I don't know a roster of the units CN has leased, I've photos of a couple that are actually former GP40s rebuilt to GP38-2s, which would be an interesting modeling project...

Thanks Chris!

Thanks for the info on the decals!! I was thinking of starting with an Athearn GP38-2 EMD demonstrator:

D%20demo.jpg

I was originally going start with a Conrail Geep and hand paint the nose white as it looks almost like it was it cityslicker's photo here:

http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=34685#comment-28595 or very least spray paint it. No access to an airbrush.

Thanks again Chris. And one day would love to see your layout.

leasers, not demos

The GMTX paint schems is a holdover from when EMD Leasing (EMDX) and GATX Leasing combined their locomotive fleets and used EMDX's simpler paint scheme. GATX bought out EMD's share when GM sold EMD. Those GP38-2s were ex-Conrail units that EMD took back at the end of their 15-year lease in 1987. While a few were repainted in the 1990's maroon-grey-silver demo colors, most were eventually repainted in the white nose scheme shown above. The GMTX fleet has been added to over the years and it's a full-time project trying to keep track of what's what and what's where. Their units can be seen anywhere in North America. Scott Chatfield

Someday when I actually build it, I'd love to invite people over to see it/run it.

@scott "...what's where..."

CN put in a substantial order of the GATX GP38-2's as they are taking back the leased lines that were run by G&W nee Rail Link in Southern Ontario. I have a good load of Athearn blue box CN painted and detailed locomotives from 25 Years ago. I have an interchange with CN on my layout..so I thought why not model one of these leasers?

I run a DC/DCC hybrid layout so most of the CN locos are still useable (but no sound). My modus is to find a unit that I can plug DCC into...another question..then I have to install speakers and lights meaning more $$$?

Athearn just got back to me and said the model is discontinued..maybe to be released later...

What would your suggestion be then for a starting point? Is there another EMD GP38-2 model available? Or should I start with a Conrail unit. Problem being the whole side of the unit should be repainted as the Conrail logo was big. So I might as well start from scratch.

Thanks guys!

Dabney's Law

"The fastest way to get the manufacturers to make a model you want is to make it yourself. They will announce their model as soon as the paint is dry on yours." - the late Fred Dabney (paraphrased) I'm kind of surprised Athearn hasn't done GATX Leasing on either their RTR or Genesis line GP38-2s. But I'm sure they will right after you do yours. I think they have done the blue&white BNSF units (leased from GATX) but I don't remember if those are GP38-2s. When I said those GP38-2s were ex-Conrail I was specifically referring to the prototypes for the EMD Leasing model you showed. GATX Leasing has added more GP38-2s to their fleet over the years. The paint is Conrail blue but if they have white noses they're full repaints. I think all of the Conrail patch jobs have been repainted for some time now. Scott Chatfield

Athearn GATX GP38-2

Athearn did the GATX/GMTX GP38-2's over 10 years ago, which hopefully means they're going to do them in the Genesis GP38-2's in the near future. Someone want to put a bug in Chris P's ear?

Chris...so Atlas are putting them out?

I was hoping to build my own.. but nice to know that Atlas is producing the model! I was asking my friend Peter when is Rapido going to release a CN GP9m? When i got back into the hobby...10 Years ago...I instantly chopped the noses on my CN Geeps with Alco cabs...not completely accurate but close enough. Wasn't that the Allen McClelland theory?

Dabney's Law

I agree..I much prefer modelling my own..that was the goal from the start hence sourcing the decals with thanks for the knowledge.

RIght now i'm finally after 25 years of modelling a CP MLW C424 with the Atlas Kato that still runs nicely (soon to be converted to DCC)..but I retained the original tank. So my project right now..instead of running up half a day to Credit Valley Hobby in Mississauga to pick up the correct split tank kit on the cheap, which is on back order anyway, i'm giving it up go. Halfway there and seems like a simple enough project.

Bottom line, I prefer a modelling project than buying something that's good to go..for me half the point of model railroading.

Thanks for the replies!
