This was one of the really big layouts at the National Train Show this year (the T-Trak, N-Trak, and Free-moN being the others). Three clubs had signs there, Missouri Valley Free-mo, OK Free-mo, and Southern Kansas Free-mo. I expect there were additional participants as well. I believe I heard there were 63 modules involved.

Wowzer.  I'd love to see

Wowzer.  I'd love to see large hi-res photo's of that layout.  I found myself wanting to click on the photo's to make them big and see more detail!

I was shooting high ISO...

So high-rez gets a bit grainy... I know that Ken Patterson shot a bunch of B-roll on the layout, Barry Silverthorn and Miles Hale were there for TrainMasters, and I've seen a bunch of other posts online (primarily on Facebook) with photos.

If there are any specific shots you are interested in, shoot me a PM and I'll send you the originals of them.

I'm editing the T-Trak layout now... something like~360 separate modules, 90+ contributors, 25 scale miles of mainline track. My fingers are getting tired.

Free-mo Participants

There were also Free-mo modelers from California (southern and central), Texas, Colorado, Utah, Canada, and more states.  It was probably one of the largest setups to date, but 2019 Salt Lake City may be even larger.

This Freemo layout is pretty spectacular and you have captured it nicely.  We all appreciate the time and effort you put into these pictures for us.

The most interesting man in the world...

That billboard is great! Nice pictures as well, I hope to hook up my free mo modules someday.

Seems very well planned

with sections that go together quite convincingly. The N section layout in another thread was a patchwork quilt affair that would be hard to view as a realistic layout......DaveB

So you are saying you shot film?  Grain and ISO are terms I haven't heard since my film days.  I thought most used digital photography now which use CCD which would have a fixed "ISO"?  Edumacate me since I'm back with the dinosaurs in photography.

I'll take a look back through and see if there are a few scenes that would be nice to see enlarged.  I don't see what appears to be a PM system here; how do I do that?

Thanks!  Jim

Digital ISO

Digital photography gets grainy looking at high ISO too. And you still have ISO with CCD's. One of the standards of a good image chip is how high you can push the ISO (light sensitivity) before the graininess makes a noticible impact.

I started out using a flash on the N-Trak layout, but the flash only travels so far - when you want to take a "down the tracks" shot, everything past about 6 feet away turns into outer darkness. You need decent depth, so that limits the F-stop options. Hauling around extra lights is out - mine require an outlet, and I am shooting fairly fast because there is a lot to shoot. And the shutter speed needs to be at least 1/100 or so, since I am shooting handheld.

After I got home I bought a bar to mount to my hotshoe that will let me lug around two LED light panels. It will be interesting to see how that works on layout photography (I expect the environment in SLC to be the same as everywhere else) and it should really be nice for product photography. I'm debating leaving the studio at home and using a background card at the vendor booths instead.

Since Jeff is busy he must have missed this, just click on a poster's screen name, right next to the date under the subject of a post. This will bring you to that person's profile page, then click Contact and it will send an email to that person.

I was lucky enough to be one of the participants from Nebraska.  It always nice to see ones work through the eyes and lenses of others

Yes, I got so caught up in the technical parts of the question I completely overlooked that.
