Have a 22' x 12' room that I am going to run a double main line around the room mostly for N Scale passenger car sets.

Rite now I have the Kato California Zephyr and The Daylight passenger cars set.  Expect I will add a Sante Fe passenger set at some point.

Not going to do any switching or really any other sidings other than a passenger terminal.    Just want to watch these wonderful passenger cars go around the room.  I have an 0n30 layout below this so that satisfies any switching itch.

My question is would passenger trains get broken down at the passenger terminal or would the terminals be long enough to handle the entire train?  These sets are in the 5-6' range without engines.  I have the room so I could do one long terminal that could double for staging.

Looking for any thoughts.

thanks

Terminal

If its truly a "terminal", the end of the run, yes, they could get broken up.  Express cars would go to the express facility, diners to the commissary, directional cars (obs, diners, lounge cars, sleepers), might be turned.  If the station was stub ended it might be doubled into the station tracks, if the terminal was run through and the platforms were too short they might double into the station.  Mail, baggage, horse cars might be added or removed, seasonal extra coaches or sleepers might be added.

Since those trains operated on different routes and used different terminals, and your primary interest is watching them run, I would just build a really big run through terminal and leave the sets alone.  Maybe have a 2 or three track "coach yard" if they offer some additional cars that you could tack on or swap out if the feeling moves you.

"Named Trains"

Named trains (Daylight, Lark, Chief) would also get full service including car washing etc,.  Russ

Maybe "terminal" wasn't the

Maybe "terminal" wasn't the best use of words.

I don't see me breaking these trains down very often, however I do like the idea of a small amount of additional cars that could be cut in / out from time to time.

I may have room to do a 4 /5 track passenger station that is double ended so I don't have to back trains in or out.

Planning a shelf that is only 12-14" deep, but could widen it out to 20" for the passenger station.  Maybe with a station facade and 3 or 4 platforms would do the trick.

Thanks for the thoughts.

Passenger Facility Thoughts

As someone suggested if these are named trains you should have them run through a car washer as they always like to keep the name trains clean and shiny.  You could also have an REA facility depending on era and swap in some REA cars and milk cars.  If you wanted to you could add a commissary and move the diner to the commissary or at least show them bringing supplies to the terminal for the dining cars.

Also, as suggested a small coach yard where you could have some extra coaches and don't forget the railway post office cars depending on era.
