Rail fan pictures. Just for the fun of it.

The yard is a short walk from my house. Cycle path overpass bridges the yard.

This photo is shot thru a frost fence that keeps the nuts from jumping in to the path of oncoming trains.

The Montréal sky line is in the background.

Nice....

Do they ever work down at this end of the yard, or is all the action at the other end?

Gorgeous shots - Do you do any processing to get the rails to jump out like that, or is that simply how they look when photographed?

Thanks Jeff,    Untouched

Thanks Jeff,

Untouched images.  Only cropping is done. The nice part about Digital photography is you can take a zillion images and keep the best, erase the rest.  The reflections on the rails is  natural, but you must fool around with the exposure (point the camera higher to take a meter reading).

The cycle path bridge is right over the entry to the yard. I go back on a daily basis to watch the switching, catch the Amtrak from New York as it cuts across, passenger trains from Quebec city and the daily public transit trains.  This is the main  between Montréal and Québec city.   Sometimes I get the daily fuel train convoy that comes barreling thru.

In the first picture at the top you can see a glimpse of 2 crossovers to the left. This is the line to New York and  the U.S.A.

Last night their was much going on.  A multy engine lashup with several old  and in bad need of paint engines were right under us whille the rest of the convoy waited. I tried to take a pic just with the availlable light, but I forgot my mono-pod at home and they turned out crap (left).  The brake man was standing in the light by  the train.  Proves you don't get it the first time all the time.

One thing about  taking pictures is having a  rail fan dog on-a-leach with you.   He watches for trains and then goes nuts running back and forth.  I have to plan ahead, give him some slack and put my foot on the leash so he does'nt pull me to one side and the other all the time. He is funny in how he can hear them coming and stands on the ledge, jumps down and runs back and forth.

Hearing-Ear Dog

That's a brilliant idea, training your dog to be your "ears" for approaching trains!  With my current family situation and frequent traveling, we can't have a dog of our own.  But I know what I'll train it [no pun intended] to do if we ever DO get one!
