Hi Joe:

In the June 2018 MRH you shared your tentative construction plans for SL2. I found your prototype most interesting, but I am wondering in the case of grades in a layout, how you would handle the transition between what may be plywood in yard areas to spline roadbed elsewhere and still keep the same ends (top and bottoms assuming shadowbox) of each module mating correctly? In other words, would you going to put the plywood also on risers to match up with the spline or?

Kind regards,

Bill

Are you asking how I will do grades on the modules?

It seems as if you're asking how I will be doing grade transitions on the modules? And in the process, transition from flat areas to modules with spline roadbed? I think the biggest question comes from the use of shadowbox benchwork. My Siskiyou Line 1 used Shadowbox benchwork and to solve the grade situation, I just made the legs longer as the benchwork climbed around the room. I also did a few transition places where the benchwork angles up quickly over a few feet. Doing such benchwork in a modular fashion simply means I will do the same exact thing -- simply make the legs longer as I go, and also build a few transition modules in the places I want the benchwork to angle up quickly.

More interested in joining spline modules to flat modules

Hi Joe:

Actually I was more interested in how you would join, using your first SketchUp example in the article, the example module to a module that uses splines only. Should we assume that in the SketchUp example, you are placing the sub road bed directly on the cross members?

As to the use of longer legs to accommodate grades, I am not so sure I would like the aesthetics of shadow boxes undulating vertically. But without actually seeing an example, my concerns might be premature.

Looking forward to the next installment.

Kind regards,

Bill
