My latest kitbash project for the Hoovertown expansion is The Henderson Building named after my sister and family. It is a combination of Bachmann's Ambassador Hotel and Walther's Merchant's Row II. Actually, it is mainly the Ambassador Hotel as the only parts I'm using from the Walther's kit is the ground floor retail front and the very top cap.

Here's the Walther's kit after I cut the sections out that I will use.

This is just one wall that I cut up from the hotel kit and I'll use the upper right section.

Here are the four assembled walls - from left to right: Right side / Left Side / Front/ and back. The walls looked like they are curved, but that is a distortion from my camera.

Here's the front after painting the brick only, motar lines added, and a black wash. I've got a ton more work to do, but when it's completed I'll have an eight story building that is 12-1/2 inches tall.

Some might say, "why would you chop up an expensive kit like the Ambassador hotel?".  Well, for one thing I got a great deal on the kit.  I also believe that I can probably make about 5 more structures from what's left.

Great start Rich

At some point a close up and some operational details on painting your bricks would be appreciated.  That one photo looks intriguing!

Keep up the good work.

Brick work

Phillip,

Thank you.  I actually tried something new on the bricks for this project.  In the past I used a gray wash (gray paint thinned 80% with alcohol) for the mortar.  This time I used "Durham's Rock Hard Water Putty" for the mortar.  I mixed it with water into a paste and used a brush to apply it all over the surface of the walls.  Immediately after appication I used my finger to wipe off the putty from the surface of the bricks by "wipe the wall, wipe finger on paper towel....wipe the wall, wipe finger on paper towel.  I let the putty dry overnight and then applied two coats of black alcohol wash (1 pint of 70% alcohol with 1 tsp of black india ink).  The base color of the brick is red auto primer spray painted on (two coats).
