Latest cars out of the paint shop:

IMG_2881.JPG

A B&O 36 ft car from an MDC car   Removed the side grabs and made the door left opening.  Added Tahoe 5'6" arch bar trucks.  Art Griffin Decals, with Sunshine Model chalk marks.  Weathering is colored pencil and air brushed dust and soot.

IMG_2882.JPG

V&SW high side gon.  This was a basket case I found at a train show, horrible paint job, unlettered, missing a side stake.  Was a wood kit probably from the 60's or 70's, it had metal side stakes.  Replaced the couplers and wheels, kept the Kadee trucks, replaced the side stack, gave it a new coat of paint.    I looked through the ORER and found a gon with a similar size, so it became V&SW 8301.  MicroScale decals, Art Griffin data decals, Sunshine chalk marks.  Air brushed weathering.

IMG_2883.JPG

W&N 512 was a Mantua 30 ft car.  Replaced the underframe with a scratchbuilt one, add wire grabs and ladders, and Tahoe 5' arch bar trucks.  MicroScale decals, Art Griffin Data, Sunshine chalk marks.  Weathering is colored pencil with airbrushed dust and soot.

NYC&HR 51245 is another Mantua 30 ft car.  Replaced the underframe with a scratchbuilt one, add wire grabs and ladders, and Tahoe 5' arch bar trucks. Art Griffin decals, Sunshine chalk marks.  Weathering is colored pencil with airbrushed dust and soot.

Great job!

Nicely detailed and weathered. I especially like the B&O boxcar. They look right at home on your layout.

Thanks for sharing, Dave.

Sad part

The sad part is that Art Griffin, who made decals for the 1800's-1930's, is out of business,  so no more decals for the pre-1930's era (other than some Westerfield sets).

Dave, I took some photos you might be interested in.

I think these cars might have been in use in your era.

Iron box car.

P1000375.JPG

Interesting trucks.

P1000376.JPG

The close up photos are because the B&O museum has things really crammed together.

P1000377.JPG

The door is still open, and I 'll bet it is because it is too hard to close.

P1000378.JPG

Tough to get shots of a box car from 3 feet away.

P1000379.JPG

It was tough sometimes to get far enough back from the signs.

P1000380.JPG

I hope it can be read from the photo.

P1000381.JPG

That is an interesting car, and it has some interesting trucks as well.

P1000382.JPG

You could also make a lot odf soup in one of these things.

P1000383.JPG

Really interesting trucks on this car.

link and pin coupler.

Hope you enjoy them.

Nice work

Good modeling Dave. Gives me some ideas. I model much the same era, maybe a little earlier, but close enough. I think I will try a couple of the boxes and the gondola. I do mine in N scale, so it's a challenge from the getgo. Nice pictures Rob. I would like to get to the B&O museum one day. I understand they made a lot of changes after the roof collapsed.

B&O pot hoppers

They are a little too old for my era.    They are available in HO and N from Shapeways.

Seven new gons

Cranked up the casting stuff and made 7 new cast resin gondola shells.  The shells started out pretty good, then gradually degraded as the molds gave out, they are about 5-6 years old, have had about 25 previous pulls on them and a lot of deep undercuts so it was just a matter of time.  With a little work I was able to save the last 4 shells for use.  Made 4 P&R three board class GHa gons and the rest were other roads with 4 board sides.  The P&R gons were lettered with Westerfield decals and the others were lettered with Art Griffin decals.  Wanted to get them in service before the pre-NMRA convention op session.  The car on the extreme right is a wood kit I bought assembled, repaired and repainted.

Removing Grabs on MDC boxcars

Dave, do you have a specific procedure and/or favorite tool for removing the grabs on the MDC boxcars and then re-scribing the sides?  Your cars don't seem to show any scars from that effort.  In your era you can't hide the grabs behind the side ladder either.

Very nice work.

Grabs

I use a chisel tip hobby knife blade (flat on one side, tapered on the other) and hold it with the tapered edge against the boxcar.  That way it shaves plastic off and doesn't dig into the car side.  I shave most of it off, then hold the blade perpendicular to the car side and scraped the remainder off.  Then I use a steel straight edge and the back side of a #11 blade to scribe in the siding grooves.  Hope that description is clear..

Removing Grabs

Thanks, Dave.  I always have the most trouble scribing in the siding grooves since the MDC board width appears narrower than a typical car of that era.

Hopperpalooza 2018

I have been working on several hopper bottom gons to add to my coal fleet.  All of them are resin kits that were produced by the Virginia Car & Foundry, produced by Bob McGlone and the late John Canfield.  Two LV 30 ton twin hopper bottom gons, two NYC 30 ton hopper bottom gons and two 20 ton single hopper bottom gons, one LV and one DL&W.  In addition, I found one old shell and underframe casting from a run of homemade castings for P&R XMe 34 ft boxcars I did several years ago.

The LV twin hoppers:

The NYC cars

The single hopper cars:

Some had brake rigging:

And the finished product, painted with Tru-Color paint.  The P&R boxcar car had selected decals from a Westerfield set.
