In researching my prototype location, which is Richmond ,In there was an online industry by the name of Oberle Jarde. I tried to do a search on the internet for them and came up with nothing. Does anybody know what type of business this was? I did find out that they were getting 15-20 carloads a month, but I have no idea what that was.

Which Richmond?

There are several Richmonds in the US.

Also, what type of cars were used, and what timeframe are we talking about?

Richmond, Indiana

Probably ex-Pennsy track. And no, I have no idea what said outfit did either, although the name does sound familiar. I don't have the Pennsy book listing customer sidings for that part of the railroad. And that name doesn't appear in the book I do have, CT-1000E, which mostly covers Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware. And a quick look at the book "A Sampling Of Penn Central", which has four photos of Richmond, shows no mention of that company either. Scott Chatfield

What was the source you were using to research it?  Is it possible that that was the name of the land owner and not the company?  Mr. Oberle Jarde owns plot 1234 and he leased it to Jones construction, but on the county records it shows as Oberle Jarde property?

The only other thing I can think of is that it was a farmer or teamster.  Several tracks I have come across have just a person's name, and they were farmers, receiving or shipping hay and produce.

Understand there is nothing on the internet.

What source even told you there was an industry?  Something had to give you that name and a car count.  Sanborn  map?  ZTS/CLIC guide?  Industrial directory?  Railroad traffic statistics?  Something.  Did the source list it as a customer or did it specify a certain track?

If there is business but no track then its likely a public or team track customer, which means they are not "on-line".  It could mean its just a private individual and not an "industry".

It was documented on the Sanborn map and the PRR track chart

Ah...

I missed the ,In after Richmond. Thought it was the beginning of the next sentence.

years

Timeframe was late 60s early 70s, although it could also have been there outside of that window.

Call the local library and ask questions

I would start here; contact the local library for that town. Ask if they know of a historical society. Than contact the historical society. Ask the library if they have a Polk Directory for that town

Have you located a Polk Directory for that location? A Polk Directory was the early version of the Yellow Pages. It had every business listed, and sometimes had an advertisement for that business as well.

If you have a track chart, you should be able to locate the location on Google maps. See if you can locate the ROW. Than see if you can locate parcels (go through the county). The parcels should have owners listed. See if any of the owners what you are looking for.

Also try and locate a Sanborn Fire Insurance Map for that town.

If they got 15-20 cars a month, that's only 3-5 cars a week, so 1 car every other day. Not exactly a 'huge' industry but still one that should be a major employer.

Personally I think your best bet would be to call the library.

I did get an answer

I did get an answer from a gentleman on the Historic Richmond Facebook group. He said Oberle-Jarde was involved with construction of Varco-Pruden metal buildings, also millwright and heavy steel erection.
